Editor, Huckleberry Herald:
North Mason float is off and
going again this year, but help is a
little scarce, maybe because word
is not ~etting around that it's
going on.
There are work parties
scheduled for Thursday evening,
May ! 5, for women and girls at
Barb Stormo's house in Allyn at
6:30 p.m.; Sunday evening, May
18, 6:30 at the band room at the
high school; and 6:30 p.m. May
21 at the band room.
Parents, students or any
willing helpers are surely
welcome. Bring hammer and saws.
Fun!!

GIRLS TRACK
The Blue and White
Cinderfemmes from North Mason
rode the ferry over to Vashon
Island, but ended up swimming
through the track at the high
school there. On May 4 all the
girls who didn't qualify for the
"Big Time" league meet met for
the non-qualifiers meet at the
Pirates' place and the NM girls
came home with five first places.
Karen Schillinger made quite
a name for herself by entering the
mile run, and in her maiden
voyage set a new school record at
6:35.0. She also attempted the
long jump for the first time in
competition this year and took
another first with a jump of
13'8". Finally, she took one more
top honor in the 80-yard low
hurdles, timing in at 12.6.
The only other first places
were taken by seniors Jo Testu in
the shotput with a heave of 28'2"
BOYS TRACK
At the Nisqually League track
meet at Federal Way Memorial
Field May 1, North Mason's track
men came home with a fair
amount of honors. With four first
places brought in, Coach Ron
Angus has high hopes for the
Bulldogs to advance to state
positioning.
Bob Miller placed first in the
spear-throwing contest with his
javelin throw of 152'6".
Following fight behind Miller was

by someone else. The woolen
quilts she ties with yarn.
One of the quilts owned by
Mrs. Beeson took 35 years to
complete. It has 6,440 one-inch
squares in it. She said when she
was a small girl her
step-grandmother had a similar
one and it fascinated her so she
decided to make one for herself.
When she first started it her
husband's 90-year-old
grandmother cut many of the
squares for it and gave them to
her. It was a tedious job so she
worked at it off and on for 35
years before it was finished in a
size to fit a double bed. It
contains both the pastel prints of
the early years and the brighter
colors popular in recent years.
Another quilt which Mrs.
Beeson has was made from a
pattern and has the state bird
from each state painted on it with
textile paints. She has used textile
paints on other quilts, including
one of her favorites, a
brightly-colored one with
peacocks, which she designed.
The faces and legs of the birds are
painted, the feathered tails are of
multi-colored fabrics.
To get materials for her quilts,
Mrs. Beeson attends rummage
sales and buys remnants. By
selling her work she gets enough
money to buy material to make
another.
Mrs. Beeson also enjoys
gardening and fin~s time for a
third hobby, writing lyrics for
songs.
The Beesons, who live on
Coulter Creek Road, came to this
area 26 years ago from California
where, Mrs. Bees'on reports, she
worked in the cotton fields to
help raise their six children. Mr.
Beeson worked in the Christmas
tree business for G. R. Kirk
before his retirement. The couple
has been married 52 years. In
addition to their six children and
27 grandchildren, the Beesons
have 16 great,grandchildren.
at LakeLand ViUage had a match
versus par contest. Beta Richlen
came in first, Winnie Tower
second and three women tied for
third place - Billie Churchill,
Helen Neuhatlser and Carrie
Harstad.
The men lucked out
weatherwise for their handicap
tournament on Saturday morning.
Although overcast, it was warm
and dry. Bill Boroughs is the new
champion, displacing last year's
winner, Erik Isakson. Jack
Connelly and Bob Prichard tied
for second place and Norm
Sanders and Stan Sarver for third.
Ron Burke came closest to the
pin on No. 5 and Russ Dahl on
No. 8. Norm Sanders had the
longest drive on No. 9.
The ladies didn't fare as well
with the weather. They started
their tournament after the men
finished. It was warm and sunny
when they started, but before
they were finished they had had
rain, hail, wind, thunder and
lightning. Patti Schillinger is the
ladies' handicap champion; Faye
Boroughs and Billie Churchill tied
for second place. June Connelly
came closest to the pin on No. 5
and Patti Schillinger on No. 8.
Faye Boroughs had the longest
drive on No. 9.
There is a correction for the
April 25 Twilight Golf
competition. Bill Harstad and
Irene Armitage had low gross -
not Russ Dahl. Sorry, Bill!

looking forward to the next
