The U.S. Treasury Department is currently
engaged in a program to encourage Social Security
recipients to choose a financial institution to which
Social Security checks may be sent directly. Mason
County Federal Credit Union is an authorized
financial institution for this purpose. Following are
some questions you may have about the program:
Q. What is the Government's direct
deposit-electronic funds transfer program?
A. It is a new method for making (when
authorized) recurring benefit payments by direct
credit to accounts maintained by beneficiaries in
-financial organizations.
Q. What are the types of recurring payments
included in the program?
A. The law now permits the Government to
make all recurring payments in this manner. However,
at the present time, the initial implementation plan
wilt provide for payments authorized by the Social
Security Administration.
Q. What does implementation mean for social
security recipients?
A. It means that (1) beneficiaries will receive
information enclosed with their monthly checks
advising them about the program and (2) the newly
designed form (SF 1199) will be available to them for
entering the program.
Must all social security recipients participate
in the program?
A. No. Participation in the program is optional.
