Volunteers cheered as students from schools throughout Mason County made their way to the field. The Day of Champions provides a day of fun for local students with special needs. It began in the early 2000s in Thurston County. "It started with one class- room, one teacher, and it just grew from there," said Julie Rowan, who helped organize the Belfair event. For the past few years, Ki- wanis organizers invited stu- dents from Shelton and Hood Canal school districts to join the event in Thurston. The event grew enormously popu- lar. Rowan said they needed to think about branching out when attendance at last year's event in Thurston topped out at almost 800. Unwilling to say goodbye to the event, Rowan it to North Mason as the first offshoot of the original Day of Champions. see CHAMPION, page A-20 Cody Andrews, a student at Olympic Middle School, enjoys the blue, red, orange and purple side of a rainbow parachute ":" billowing in the breeze during the inaugural North Mason Day of Champions on May 9 at Phil Pugh Stadium in Belfair.
