Rally racing, the latest addition
to the X-Games, will swing through
Mason County in world-class form
this weekend with the arrival of
the pro sport's 2007 Olympus In-
ternational Rally.
Racing itself will be May 19-20
in Olympia and in the hinterlands
of Shelton, but as usual there will
be lots of attractions surrounding
the event as well.
Saturday night from 8 to mid-
night, for instance, there'll be
gawking aplenty for those willing
to shell out the $15 for admission
to a party for the racers at Little
Creek Casino, where there'll be
live music and videos as well of the
morning's racing.
Then the following morning,
May 20, race cars and their teams
of drivers and navigators will
pit for public inspection right in
downtown Shelton from 8:30 to 9
a.m. And when that's over they'll
resume their racing.
AND WHAT DOES that en-
tail? Let the public-relations folks
tell it by way of their May 2 press
release from Ronald McDonald
Hottse Charities, to which a por-
tion of the ticket-sale proceeds will
go:
"Fast. Edgy. Dangerous.
"Rally racing is the newest sport
to be included in the ultimate ex-
treme 2007 X-Games in Los Ange-
les this summer.
"Over 70 cars and 140 competi-
tors are expected to compete in
the 2007 Olympus International
Rally on May 17 to 20, 2007, in the
Olympia-Shelton-McCleary area.
Teams from all over the coun-
try will compete in this X-Games
qualifier race.
"HEADLINING THE competi-
tion is Travis Pastrana, one of the
top rally drivers in the country.
Formerly a motocross racer, he
revolutionized motocross racing
by doing the first successful mid-
air back flip, flying 40 feet above
his bike (sic).
"Imagine two people in a small
street-legal car - one drives; one
navigates. The car is equipped
with four-wheel drive, turbo-
charged to over 300 horsepower
and races full speed through dirt
and mud down logging, dirt and
fire roads, careening around trees,
rocks and cheering fans.
"Each car races against the
clock in a series of timed stages.
On the outside it appears the cars
are winding wildly through the
forest, moving sideways more of-
ten than straight. However, inside,
the driver smoothly orchestrates
the steering wheel, throttle pedal,
brake and clutch while following
the instructions of the co-driver in
mechanical harmony.
"EVERY CAR IS street-legal
with insurance and headlights,
but inside it's a race car and is
equipped with roll cage and har-
nesses. Team members wear fire-
proof suits and helmets. Competi-
tors range from 16 to 60 years old.
Spectators can watch from desig-
nated portions of the course.
"Rally racing originated in Eu-
rope nearly 100 years ago and is a
fixture on the European extreme-
sports scene. It is fast becoming
one of the most popular extreme
motorsports in the U.S. Rally
America is an official sanctioning
body for the sport of rally racing in
the United States."
Saturday's ceremonial race
start is set for 9:30 to 10 a.m.
at the Washington State Capitol
grounds near the winged victory
sculpture in Olympia. The race
starts officially at 10 a.m.

Soccer camp
sign-up time
Sign.-ups are being taken now
for the Junior Climber Soccer
Academy June 25-28 at the South
Mason Soccer Park.
For boys and girls ages 5-12,
the four-day program features a
morning session from 9 to 11 for
those 5 to 8 years old and an af-
ternoon session from noon to 2 for
9- through 12-year-olds.
Cost is $50 per player.
Instruction once again is pro-
vided by Climber girls' soccer
coach Brett Bartlett and several
of his varsity mainstays.
"Not only will the Junior Climb-
ers learn the fundamentals of the
game," reads the academy's pub-
licity flier, "but they will learn
confidence-builders, good sports-
manship, self-discipline and re-
spect for themselves and others."
Each player receives a Junior
Climber Soccer Academy T-shirt.
Shin guards are required protec-
tive gear for the program.
The soccer park is at 2102 Johns
Prairie Road.
DESPITE HIGHRISE HEROICS from the likes of senior
player and perennial all-leaguer Dwain Friedlander (2),
Climber soccer and their retiring 27th-year coach Brian
missed out on the postseason by a single goal last week,
Yelm in a match they had only to win to clinch the league's
berth. Flanking the star midfielder above are teammates Alex
a junior) and Jared Ibarra (20, an upstart ninth-grader). The
finished Coach Fairbrother's final season at 5-6-1 in league.
