Bluegrass fest draws 1,200 fans
PEOPLE PICK NOT JUST their friends but also their in-
struments at an impromptu jam session during Bluegrass
in the Forest, held recently on the campus of Shelton High
School.
People who play on the green
grass have the bluegrass to thank
for improvements to Callanan
Park in Shelton.
This year's staging of Blue-
grass in the Forest was a financial
and musical success, according to
Duane Wilson of Kristmastown
Kiwanis. That's the local organi-
zation that has worked with doz-
ens of Mason County businesses
to make the annual festival pos-
sible since 2005.
Festival events included mu-
sic in the Shelton High School
Auditorium by John Reischman
& the Jaybirds and other profes-
sional bands as well as workshops
in which the pros coached people
still learning to play the banjo
and other bhegrass instruments.
Reischman gave a workshop
on playing the mandolin, and a
workshop on the stand-up bass
drew eight participants.
GREG LINDER of Runaway
Train, the host band for the an-
nual event, said approximately
1,200 people attended the three-
day festival, held April 27-29 in
and around the SHS Auditorium.
"Family bands were a real hit,"
he said. "Band scramble was re-
ally fun."
An institution unique to blue-
grass music, the band scramble
features what Linder described as
"hastily formed bands drawn from
a hat." Four bands were formed
this way, with honors going to the
top three. Many of the scramblers
had never been on stage before.
Many of the people in the audio
ence came here from out of town,
with places as near as BremertOn
and as far as Portland represent"
ed at the gathering. "We drew a
lot of people from Oregon," wil-
son said. "If we can get those guys
here and jamming, I'm sure we
can get more Mason County folio
coming."
The plan is to move the play
date back a little bit in 2008 and
stage next year's festival on the
