Shelton School District boaid members approved during their public meeting on May 8 to award the con- tract to Western Washington Construction, located in Ho- quiam. The company's base bid of $238,420 was the lowest of four qualified bids received by director of facilities Bob Woods. None of the bids came from a Mason County firm. The other base bids ranged from $239,930 to $334,949. In addition, Western Washington Construction of- fered a 10-~ear "insurance" plan for $6,900. The other companies offered Similar warranties ranging in price between $5,400 to $20,000. Woods told board mem- bers he did his homework and that several school dis- tricts near Shelton had used Western Washington Con- struction ih the past. The company, Woods said. came with "sparkling recom- mendations." The goal is for the new roof to last 30 years. Board mem- ber Sue McCausland, how- ever, said she'd heard that before. "I want to know there's go- ing to be somebody covering this if somebody moves south for the winter.".McCausland said. "Are we going to get surprised here?" McCausland and her fel- low board members have rea- son to be concerned. She said the board was taken aback when the cost of the new en- trance to Shelton High School came in at about $80.000 up from the original estimate of $35,000. The roof at Evergreen El- ementary also is on district officials' minds. Ideally, the roof wouldn't need ~o be re- placed already. The roof was installed only eight years ago. Woods said the previous contractor "undernailed" the nails on the existing roof when the school was con- structed. "Well, it took almost seven and a half years for those to start popping through the shingles." Unfortunately for the school district, Woods said, the shingles weren't guaran- teed for 30 years. The state of Washingxon has a six-year limitation on workmanship, Woods said. "That's why we're trying to up the ante on this one." Woods said. The 10-year insurance plan doesn't have a dollar limit. And the district has resolved to hire a roofing in- spector "to do spot checks so many times a week -- some- thing that wasn't done last time," Woods said. The inspector comes at a cost not to exceed $15,000, Woods said. T] money well-sp Causland said wanted to avo tional surprises Woods said originally budl $350.000 for merit project.
