By DEAN SIEMON
Alec Martinson became
Shelton High School's lone
state qualifier for the 4A
WIAA Boys Golf State
Championships later this,
month after finishing sixth
in the 4A Narrows League
Championships.
Martinson scored a
round of 76 in the league
tournament's first day on
Tuesday, May 10 at Span-
away Lake Golf Course in
Spanaway Lake. He shot a
round of 78 on Wednesday,
May 11 to finish with a two-
day score of 154.
The top-seven golfers
in the league tournament
gained automatic berths to
the state championships on
May 24 and 25 at Qualchan
Golf Course in Spokane.
First place went to
Olympia High School's
Dom Francks with scores
of 72 and 68, followed by
Bellarmine Preparatory
School's Michael Almonte's
73 and 72.
Shelton head coach
Mark Jensen said Martin-
son played well despite the
rain throughout the day,
getting out of jams to close
out the second day with six
straight pars.
"He was having a little
trouble with his swing,"
Jensen said. "He'll continue
to work on it."
As a team, Shelten fin-
ished fourth in the league
with a total score of 568.
Bellarmine Prep took the
team title with 518, fol-
lowed by Olympia's 530 and
Gig Harbor High School's
554.
Sophomores Zach Lund
and Colten Gott were on
the outside looking in for
berths into the 4A West
Central District meet, a
second chance for golf-
ers that finished eighth
through 16th.
Gott missed the district
cut by one stroke, while
Lund was behind by four
strokes.
"I thought any of them,
If they could put two games
together, had a shot [at
state]," Jensen said.
