;COMMENTARY
The sport of summer, right?
Dean Siemon
Here we are in the mid-
dle of May and the high-
school baseball season is
just about over.
Wait, already?
It was just a few weeks
ago I remember base-
ball and softball games
throughout western Wash-
ington were being rushed
into make-up dates and
postseason tournaments
being moved a day or two
to accomdate rain-outs and
postponements.
But I wonder why the
high-school season doesn't
go through the end of the
school yeaff They do that
with college baseball.
Right now, both NCAA
Division I baseball and
softball are entering league
tournaments. I only know
this because I get the e-
mail updates that my alma
mater, Valparaiso Univer-
sity, is the favorite in both
the Horizon League base-
ball and softball champion-
ships.
Maybe this can be a
model schedule for the
Washington Interscholas-
tic Activities Association
(WIAA).
Like most of Washing-
ton, games here were being
postponed at least once or
twice a week. The problem
is that several teams in the
state were more focused
on scheduling their last-
minute games and risk the
chance of being exhausted
in the week prior to the
postseason league and dis-
trict tournaments.
So why should we go
through this stress when
we know that the really ter-
rible weather is in March
and April (especially this
year).
Concerns for many is
that with global warming,
there won't be much bet-
ter in 2012 and beyond for
those same months. If most
people have noticed, weath-
er has progressively gotten
worse lately (i.e. more flood-
ing across the country and
more natural disasters in
recent years than before).
So if the summer has the
best weather for baseball
and softball, which can't
play in the rainy months of
March and April, a sched-
uling change might need to
be considered.
Obviously, there is still
a chance for rain, but pos.
sibly expanding the season
to allow another week or
two in June gives teams the
chance to enjoy some good
weather for more games.
This also guarantees a
better chance of blue and
cloudless skies for the dis-
trict tournaments and mov-
ing towards the WIAA state
championships.
This is not to say that the
high school season should
have as many games as the
colleigate level, but don't
make a team play more
than two games in a week
since a lot of teams have
one or two pitchers on a
staff.
Baseball is a summer
sport. Maybe the execu-
tives at the WIAA need to
be reminded of that.

Power Climbers
place at state
By DEAN SIEMON
Several Shelton High School athletes
earned some hardware at t;he Washington
State High School Powerlil~Ling Champion-
ships on May 7 at Columbia High School
in White River.
The boys team finished third place over-'
al~ ~bohind team champ,ions Montesano
.... and ~-hite River. : ..........
~Fer us to go in there with some tough
teams and for us to take third is really a
major accomplishment,'~ Shelten coach
Lorna Martinson said.
Shelton's Tyler Love finished second
place in the 123-pound dlivision, highlight-
ed by a 195-pound benc!h press.
Love also had a 215,-pound squat and
lifted 275 pounds in the dead lift. ,
"He always challen~ges himself," Mar-
tinson said.
Robert Crawford t~ook third in the
114-pound division wi?~h 545 pounds total
in the three lifts (ben,ch, squat and dead-
lift). A 175-pound sqvmt was the lone dis-
sapointment for him.
Shelton's girls powerlifting took fourth
as a team with two s.th]etes - Eva Zacar-
ias and Jennifer Twi,dwell.
In the girls 123-poured division, Zacar-
ias had a bench press of 105 pounds for
what is considered a major accomplish-
ment for any female powerlifter.
"That's kind of the golden mark for
girls," Martinson ssdd.
Twidwell was in the unlimited weight
class, taking second place with a bench of
130, squat of 230 and dead lift of 260.
"She's just been laid back and she said
'Oh I'll try it," Ma rtinson said.

Soils said Adams will be
challenged for his speed en-
durance to see if he can qualify
to the state championships.
Ryan has proven himself
to be a consummate competi-
tor, with the ability to beat
athletes with better [personal
records],~ he said.
Other qualifiers from the
league meet include the girls
4x200 relay team (Natalie
Andrewski, Kasey Burbridge,
Kandyce Bragg and Thomp-
son), Jon Ownby (boys javelin),
Alaura Jones (girls discus) and
Tre Fisher (boys high jump).
To qualify for the state
championship, Shelton ath-
letes must finish in the top-
eight of their event.
"Placing in the top eight will
be tough,~ Sells said. ~But as
