A--1 k IF] Fame, fortune, adventure and circumstance - -- these were the magnets that drew the pioneers to Shelton and Mason County. There were forests to be logged, railroads to be built, mills to be established and new towns to be raised up. And there were men of vi~i,on and hardiness, willing to fora.~i,e steadier lives to pi()nec: ibis g,e:.'l new world of 2Jorthv,,e:~t loggL:;~'. THEY CAME froin ;ill occr- from Scotland to Canada to down- east Maine-.-all for their own spe- cial reasons and ~11 to make con- tributian to a picturesque new era. Some made fortlmes while oth- ers lost their shirts, but they came all the stone and they've left u,~ a colorful, tangy past. In 1384, a group of Seattle. businessmen ventured into tim area to bnild the Satsop Railroad. They were C. F. W'hite, James Currie, R. R. Spencer and J. lS:. McDonald and they were backed by eastern capital. THEY, SELECTED a site at the head of a bay on David Shclton's donation claim. Others soon followed, hoping t:o find success in the new logging. Some of the names heard were those of Sol G. Simpson, W. tt. Knee!and, MarR Draham, the Bof deaux Brothers and A. H. Ander- son. '1'hose men laid out rails and knocked down trees and set up logging camps, and the woods re- sounded with the bellowing of ox teams, tile whacking of axes and zinging of saws.
