called "pigtail" round of the tour-
ney, where the lower seeds face
single elimination in their quest
for the regular, double-elimina-
tion part of the tournament. He
pulled out a 6-4, 7-5 victory over
Aberdeen's Peter Means before
hitting the meat of the upper divi-
sion and bowing out shy of place-
ment.
SIMILARLY triumphant was
the Climbers' number-one dou-
bles duo of junior Josh Remmen
and freshman Bryan Woods, who
knocked off Aberdeen's Pete Day
and Mike err 7-5 and 6-4 before
bowing out against two of the top-
seeded tandems.
And, last but not least, the
Climbers' second doubles team of
freshman Brandon Bennett and
junior Mike Currier - both first-
year players - gave Tumwater's
Rick Gadd & Eliot Stevenson a
tussle before bowing out in their

Kneeling behind him, from left, are Luke Carlson, Ryan Crabtree,
David Ness, Tom Brewer, Bryan Woods, Josh Remmen and Brandon

pigtail match by the score of 3-6,
1-6.
BREWER, SEEDED sixth in
the singles division, followed up a
first-round bye with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-
4 win over third-seeded Tony Cole
of Tumwater.
Ironically, Cole went on to sur-
vive the losers' bracket and finish
fourth overall - ahead of his
Climber vanquisher.
Anyway, Brewer then ran into
defending (and eventually repeat)
champion Ben Handy of Olympia
and lost 2-6, 0-6, and then he
bowed out by way of a 4-6, 2-6
loss to Olympia's Eric Leicht -
the eventual third-place finisher.
CRABTREE, meanwhile, fol-
lowed his pigtail win with an oh-
and-oh loss to eventual runner-up
Scott Nguy of Capital and a 1-6,
0-6 loss to ely's aforementioned
Leicht.
A fine performance it was
nonetheless, says Climber head
coach John Perry, noting
was Ryan's first time at
trict.
Remmen and Woods followed
their opening victory with a 2-6,
1-6 loss to second-seeded (and
eventual fourth-place-finishing)
Jason Higbee and Jesse Allan of
Tumwater and a 2-6, 2-6 loss to
Kiley Floor and Kyle Newman of
Capital.
ALL IN ALL, says Coach Per-
ry, the season was a success.
With four regular-season wins as
a team, after all, his boys met
their preseason goal - namely, to
double last year's victory count.
More impressive, he notes,
they did it despite fielding the
youngest team in the league, with
no fewer than three freshmen in
varsity roles. The only school
even close was Aberdeen, with a
pair.
"So .... feelin' good!' quips the
veteran head coach.

Big- 10
crown
Shannon Beeler, Shelton's Div-
ision I fastpitch all-American,
leads her Minnesota Golden Go-
phers into the NCAA regional fin-
als this week.
The 1996 Shelton High School
graduate clubbed her 13th home
run (she's already the school's all-
time recordholder in that depart-
ment, with 43) in Minnesota's
3-2 championship-game win over
perennial titleist Michigan last
weekend, when the Gophers went
3-0 to win their first-ever Big Ten
tournament championship.
Awaiting them at this week's
regional tourney, incidentally, is
UCLA - the number-one-ranked
team in the nation.
Beeler goes into the tourney
batting a team-high .361, with 57
rbi (one shy of the lead) and 12
doubles (again tops on the team).
And all this with a busted-up
hand she can hardly grip the bat
with but still refuses to turn over
to the surgeon's knife till after her
Olympic team tryout, which fol-
lows closely on the heels of her
collegiate season.
Incidentally, with 238 career
runs batted in, Beeler stands fifth
on the all-time NCAA Division I
list, just two runs behind #4.
Her Gophers' first regional out-
ing, against Creighton, is set for
this afternoon in Los Angeles.
Win or lose, they'll play tomorrow
as well.

tion part of the tournament. He
pulled out a 6-4, 7-5 victory over
Aberdeen's Peter Means before
hitting the meat of the upper divi-
sion and bowing out shy of place-
ment.
SIMILARLY triumphant was
the Climbers' number-one dou-
bles duo of junior Josh Remmen
and freshman Bryan Woods, who
knocked off Aberdeen's Pete Day
and Mike err 7-5 and 6-4 before
bowing out against two of the top-
seeded tandems.
And, last but not least, the
Climbers' second doubles team of
freshman Brandon Bennett and
junior Mike Currier - both first-
year players - gave Tumwater's
Rick Gadd & Eliot Stevenson a
tussle before bowing out in their

pigtail match by the score of 3-6,
1-6.
BREWER, SEEDED sixth in
the singles division, followed up a
first-round bye with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-
4 win over third-seeded Tony Cole
of Tumwater.
Ironically, Cole went on to sur-
vive the losers' bracket and finish
fourth overall - ahead of his
Climber vanquisher.
Anyway, Brewer then ran into
defending (and eventually repeat)
champion Ben Handy of Olympia
and lost 2-6, 0-6, and then he
bowed out by way of a 4-6, 2-6
loss to Olympia's Eric Leicht -
the eventual third-place finisher.
CRABTREE, meanwhile, fol-
lowed his pigtail win with an oh-
and-oh loss to eventual runner-up
Scott Nguy of Capital and a 1-6,
0-6 loss to ely's aforementioned
Leicht.
A fine performance it was
nonetheless, says Climber head
coach John Perry, noting
was Ryan's first time at
trict.
Remmen and Woods followed
their opening victory with a 2-6,
1-6 loss to second-seeded (and
eventual fourth-place-finishing)
Jason Higbee and Jesse Allan of
Tumwater and a 2-6, 2-6 loss to
Kiley Floor and Kyle Newman of
Capital.
ALL IN ALL, says Coach Per-
ry, the season was a success.
With four regular-season wins as
a team, after all, his boys met
their preseason goal - namely, to
double last year's victory count.
More impressive, he notes,
they did it despite fielding the
youngest team in the league, with
no fewer than three freshmen in
varsity roles. The only school
even close was Aberdeen, with a
pair.

Big- 10
crown
Shannon Beeler, Shelton's Div-
ision I fastpitch all-American,
leads her Minnesota Golden Go-
phers into the NCAA regional fin-
als this week.
The 1996 Shelton High School
graduate clubbed her 13th home
run (she's already the school's all-
time recordholder in that depart-
ment, with 43) in Minnesota's
3-2 championship-game win over
perennial titleist Michigan last
weekend, when the Gophers went
3-0 to win their first-ever Big Ten
tournament championship.
Awaiting them at this week's
regional tourney, incidentally, is
UCLA - the number-one-ranked
team in the nation.
Beeler goes into the tourney
batting a team-high .361, with 57
rbi (one shy of the lead) and 12
doubles (again tops on the team).
And all this with a busted-up
hand she can hardly grip the bat
with but still refuses to turn over
to the surgeon's knife till after her
Olympic team tryout, which fol-
lows closely on the heels of her
collegiate season.
Incidentally, with 238 career
runs batted in, Beeler stands fifth
on the all-time NCAA Division I
list, just two runs behind #4.
Her Gophers' first regional out-
ing, against Creighton, is set for
this afternoon in Los Angeles.
Win or lose, they'll play tomorrow
as well.
