season going strong

The Mason County Youth Baseball As-
sociation (MCYBA) spring season is going
strong.
"I think it's going great," MCYBA presi-
dent Josh Eveland said. "We had a lot of
changes, added a lot of stuff and had an ac-
tive board."
The association has 34 teams serving 410
children this season.
"I think this is our best season as far as
numbers go," Eveland said. "We're trying to
increase that and keep the older kids coming
back."
Eveland said the MCYBA is trying to
build a program that will be in place for years
to come. The association has put together a
concession stand that's bringing in funds.
The stand is also portable, so the MCYBA
will be able to take it to other events, such as
OysterFest, to continue raising funds even
when baseball is not in season.
"This year started off rocky while we
waited for the county to finish construction
at Mason Country Recreation Area (MCRA)
but now it's moving smoothly," Eveland said.
"We're not planning on making any changes
between now and next season."
The goal for the program is to have a set
structure for children playing T-ball up to
teens playing baseball, Eveland said.
"We gradually introduce more skills at
each level," he said. "We want to make our
program a powerhouse."
The ball players are split up into five age
groups and children from as young as 3 to as
old as 17 are allowed to play.
"We've always wanted to have an older
team but they've gone with the Timbers,"
Eveland said. "We've stepped up to start that
team."
He said he's heard there will not be Tim-
bers teams this summer, though former head
Timbers coach Erik Engstrom said there are
two coaches working to put together a 14U
and a 16U team for the summer. Engstrom
has chosen not to be involved in the Timbers
this summer.
Home games are played at MCRA and
the MCYBA interleagues with South Sound
Baseball, so children who live on the border
of Mason and Thurston counties can chose
which league to play for.
Though the season is still going, Eveland
did not have schedules for remaining games
available.
He said there will be an end-of-the-sea-
son tournament, though it had not yet been
scheduled.
Finally, the All-Star team try-outs are
scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. June 3 at MCRA.
