Sarah Newman, D.C.
Ithe problem is largely age-related, I
the fact is that children suffer from, II
back pain as well. According to I
epidemiological studies, about one- II
third of children and adolescents II
experience low back pain at
some point in their young lives.
However, a recent stqdy involving
nearly 3,000 patients reveals that,
in the case of three-quarters of
adolescents with mechanical
)w back pain, the source is non-
)ecific and self-resolving. This
nding argues for a minimalist
pproach, which chiropractic
care can provide, Even in 7% of
cases involving spondylosis (spinal
osteoarthritis), the conservative
l approach is preferred. I
Back pain that lasts longer than I
three months is referred to as II

indicative of some underlying

SHS soccer loses final game
By EMILY HANSON
emily@m, asoncounty,com
The Shelton boys' soccer team lost its final game
of the season earlier this month.
On May 8, Mt. Tahoma defeated the Highclimb-
ers 2-1.
"We out-played them and shot them," SHS head
boys' soccer coach Isaiah Herrera said. "It was like
that the whole season. We just couldn't score."
Eric Mendiola scored for Shelton in the first two
minutes of the game.
"We played well but scoring was our issue," Her-
rera said,
He said the Highclimbers performed well as a
team, despite how young the team was compared to
others in the 4A Narrows League.
"We stayed in big games and learned a lot from
this season," Herrera said.
He characterized his first season with the High-
climbers as "a good one."
"I learned a lot about the boys and the school,"
Herrera said. "It gets me excited about the next
year."

18 county athletes competing in state tourneys
Despite Mason County
schools having a repu-
tation for low ath-
letic performance, 18 Mason
County athletes are repre-
senting their schools at state
competitions this week.
As of Tuesday. the 4A
State Boys' Golf Champion-
ship had already begun, at
which Alec Martinson and
Zach Lund represented Shel-
ton. The championship was
scheduled to end yesterday,
so the results of how Mar-
tinson and Lund performed
were not yet available.
This weekend, three coun-
ty high schools have athletes
competing in the state track
and field championships.
Shelton is sending Indi

North
Mason is
sending 10 athletes to the
2A State Track and Field
Championships, also at Mt.
Tahoma.
C.J. Allen. Emma Berg,
Nick Jensen, Tommy Marsh,
Alicia Martin, Ruby Nelson,
Alivia Sandquist, Tabitha
Schwerzler, Emily Walsh
and Evelyn Williams are all
competing for the Bulldogs.
Finally, Linda Cook, Nick
Dierkop and Hannah Frost
are representing Mary M.
Knight at the 1B State Track
and Field Championships at
Eastern Washington Univer-
sity in Cheney.
It's not easy for any ath-
lete to reach the state cham-
pionship for their sport, so
I want to take a moment to
congratulate these athletes
on their hard work and dedi-
cation throughout the spring.
Whether or not they come
home with medals, these
athletes are all champions to
me and I hope their families,
friends and peers feel the
same.
