General Wolf ave Club Cold Winter Didn't Slay Pea Weevils, Kill 'Em With DDT It was a coht winter but it wasn't cold enough to make much of a dent in the pea weevil popu- lation, according to Andy Kruis- wyk, county extension agent. ONL DIRECT exposure to tmnperatures 16 below zero or lower will kill weevils, lie says federal entomologists advise. Most of %Vashington's pea-growing sec- tioris had a deep snow blanket during winter, giving the weevils perfect protection. Weevils return to the pea fiehls at the end of the hibernation peri- od or about the time the peas be- gin to blossom. In view of the weevils' ability to stand cold weather. Kruiswyk says pea growers will have to count on control with insecticides as LIsual. The agent says the latest con- trol recommendation with DDT is use of 15 to 20 polmds of five pev sent DDT dust per acre. ac- cording to David H. Brannon. ex- tension entomologist of Washing- ton State College. DDT slmuld be applied when peas are in [)loom :md th first pods have started to form. One to two applications of DDT are usually necessary, es- pecially on peas grown £or can- nin; or freezing. lINE OF DDT is not rcoom- nlended wherepea ensilage or pea hay is to be fed to dairy cattle or to livesLock being finished for shut[4'hter, In such sreas rotenone dusts are recommended. A ,75 rotenone dust should fh'st he ap- pliod wllen Lhe telnperature is 70 degrees" or higher and when tim peas are in bloom and the first pods have 'started to fornr, One Io three applications at close in- tervals and at the rate of 20 pounds per acre are recommended for rotenone, SICCS' SEATTLE BREWING & MALTING CO., 5EATILE, U.$. glecb00--- Appliances -- Supplies -- Fixtures l HEARING AID BATTERIE LAMPS - 6 to 1000 Watts WESTINGHOUSE ..o,0., Refrigerators Laundromat, the best automztic wasler built.
