Quilt Continued from page B-1 said. "Probably 10 or 15 years ago ... some nurses came to the group and asked if we could make some quilts for babies at the hospital." Each year, the quilters go crazy making as many baby quilts as they can. Several members of the group also crochet Afghans. One year, the group made 300 child-size quilts for the hospital. "I've made up to 80 a year by my- self," Mineo said. Mineo said that she started sew- ing at nine or 10 years old. "I grew up on a dairy farm in rural Wisconsin and I was in 4H and one of the projects you could do is sew," she said. The Christmastown Quilters do- nate quilts to three other hospital programs, including Fantasy For- est, the hospital's annual charity golf tournament and the Sherwood Guild's Cooking with Xinh fundrais- er. They also donate a quilt each year 'for the Karen Hilburn Fund. One of the unique things about the Christmastown Quilters is that they don't make any money from their work. Every person in the club donates their time, sewing machine, thread and fabric. The group 0nly pays for batting, which Mineo said is the most expensive part of quilting. "With $200 or $300 a year we make all of those quilts," she said. Last week, several members spent much of their quilt club meeting sort- ing through boxes of donated fabric from another quilting group. Island Continued from page B-1 within their area in event of disaster. It was estab- lished that the Panchot residence would be a gather- ing point in case of some kind of event. The community would work on lists such of supplies and equipment and what special skills they might share, as well as special need items, such as medicine. Of concern were those who might need assistance with mobil- ity. We discussed how and what to put in a survival kit for the home and car. The community agreed to continue to work together on compiling info and plan another meeting this coming August. I would like to remind the community that Mason 5 is happy to help with classes on preparedness and on first aid class- es. We would like minimum of 20 people per class. If there is a Community Assn. or group that is interested they can me at 427-5521." Kathy Ross is sponsoring a Harstine Island Art Stu- clio Show at 10 E. Ballow Road. Ross, Lillian Morlock and Susan Holland will have their show from noon to 5 p.m. on May 28, 29 and 30. They would like you to join them. Ross has been a full time self employed 3-D artist since 1978. Most common comment: this is the most unique thing I've ever seen. Where do these ideas come from? Holland has had paint under her finger- nails for at least 65 years and has a few woodcarving calluses as well. She studied at Tyler School of Fine Arts of Temple University, in Philadelphia. Currently she divides her attention between somewhat impres- sionistic painting and working in wood. She finds liv- ing creatures fascinating, and her work tends to be of animate subjects. Morlock just graduated from the University of Washington with a BFA. Her imagery (sculpture and prints) includes skulls, eyes, dreams, telescopes, owls, set in rich stormy landscapes. Sunday, May 29, the Fresh Start Market and Dell is opening. Several months ago Deborah Wallace talk- ed to Pioneer Kiwanis about her dream to open a store - well "that dream is about to come true. Deborah's store is going to be unique in that it will offer grocery supplies in a fresh and interesting way. She will offer organic fair trade coffee, but no espresso or latte's. Lo- cal fresh farm produce will be a central feature along bulk foods. A local artist, Barbara Cambell, painted a wonderful mural on the wall between the produce and bulk foods. Look at it closely as Barbara has cleverly hidden eleven bunnies in the background. Connected to the market is the dell It will feature draft beer and wine by the glass. On Fridays and Saturdays, they will have hand crafted gourmet pizza. There will also be a large selection of Dee's Teas. There is a lot more to the store, so stop by and check it out, I think you will have a great time shopping. Fantasy Continued from page B-1 never thought about enter- ing." Years later, Jordan came across the competition again, completelY by acci- dent. "In 2004 I was looking online for people to publish science fiction illustrations ... I came across the contest again," she said. Jordan first entered piec- es in the contest in 2007, and recently was a winner in the 2011 contest. At the workshops in California, Jordan met and worked with artists she had long admired for their work, ' including contest judge Dave Dorman, who did original illustrations for the original "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" mov- ies. During the week and a half of workshops Jordan went to with the other con- test winners, she said she learned valuable skills from artists including Dorman, and Stephen Hickman, who has done modern illustra- tions for the "Lord of the Rings" novels. "It's really awesome," she said. "I never went to art school - I have learned some really awesome technical skills. I learned how to use oil paints and layer them." Jordan said she's eager to put some of those skills to use as soon as possible "[Hickman] taught me how to paint a hologram in oil paint," she said. While Jordan used to view her art as just an en- joyable pastime, winning the contest has given her the confidence to see her art now ... now that I've seen as a career, what these guys do and how "I'm pushing it a lot more serious they are," she said.
