John Robert Akin John Robert Akin, 90, died on Saturday, May 21, 2011, after a short illness. He was born July 9, 1920 in Tilden, Illinois, to Charles Joseph Akin and Ernestine Louise Moody. After graduating from Sparta, Ill., High School in 1939 he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps for one In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Dur- ing World War H, he served in the South Pacific aboard P.T. Beats. Akin He mar- ried Mar- jorie Jean Keyzers on July 4, 1943 in Bremerton. In 1947, Akin entered Bradley University in Peo- ria, minois, from where he graduated in 1951 with a Masters Degree in Sociology. While attending school, he worked in an Illinois prison. In august 1951, he became employed as the first case- worker at Oregon State Peni- tentiary. During his years at OSP, he was involved in two serious inmate riots in 1953 and 1968. He gained the re- spect of beth inmates and staff. He participated in the formulation and operation of special programs designed to help inmates prepare for suc- cessful pest-release. He collected baseball cards, helped through labor, s pport monetary support in restor- ing two World War H P.T. Boats. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Salem, P.T. Inc. Board of Directors, SECU Beard of Directors, Save the P.T. Beat, Inc., National As- sociation of Civilian Con- servation Corps., Oregon State Corrections Retirees (O.S.CA.R.). For 13 years he coached Church League bas- ketball and soRball teams in Salem. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Jean (Keyzers) Akin; sons Larry Robert Akin of Salem, Ore. and Norman C. Akin of Oregon City, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; 32 great- grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Betty Ann McGhee Barnett Betty Ann McGhee Bar- nett, 91, died Sunday, May 22, 2011 at home in Shelton. She was born November 10, 1919 in CleElum to John Franklin McGhee and Matil- da (Evans) McGhee. She married Conley Lewis Barnett on April 3, 1936 in McGhee Shelton. Barnett She was an active member of Skokomish Com- munity Church. She was a mariner's fan, enjoyed gar- dening, reading, knitting and friends and family. He was a resident of Shelton for 21 years. He was bern February 16, 1920 in Gypsum, Karl. to El- mer Herr and Ethel (Ballan- tyne) Herr. He graduated from Pate- res High School in 1937 and from Pep- perdine University, Osteopath- ic College of Medicine Herr in 1947. He mar- ried Ruby Lorene Galbraith on August 29, 1941 in Wenatchee. He was an anesthesiolo- gist and osteopathic physi- cian in Wenatchee, Yakima and Tieton. He enjoyed being a chil- dren's summer camp di- rector, sang tenor for the Apollo Club, was very active in gardening, tennis, swim- mip , ing, boating. He was a Bey Scout Troup leader, bible teacher and raised horses in Wenatchee. He attended Shelton FourSquare and Riv- ers of Grace church. He is survived by his wife Ruby Herr of Shelton; sons Ronald Orville Herr of Al- bany, Ore., Dennis W. Herr of Olympia; daughter Melo- dy Olels of Shelton and son Dana A. Herr of Marysville and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Ethel and El- mer Herr, brothers Marion, Clyde, Russell and Ernest Herr and son Craig Herr. Kuinise Seiu Togsfifi Wily Kuinise Seiu Togafiti Wily, 69, died Thursday, May 19, 2011 in Shelton. He lived in Shelton for the last 12 years. He was bern July 24, 1941 to Felisi and Tuli Togafiti Wily in Safotu, Samoa. He lived most of his live in Laie, Hawaii and retired from Hawaiian Electric as a lineman. His hobbies and inter- ests included golfing, fish- ing, dancing and singing. He was a proud member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints church. Online condolences may be sent to the family at mccombflLcom. Ray E. Manke Molly Josephine Morris Ray E. Manke, 69, died Monday May 16, 2011 at home with his family at his side. He was a resident of Hood Canal. He was born April 19, 1942 in Shelton to Elmer and Dorothy (Piller) Manke. He graduated in 1960 from Irene S. Reed High School. He attended the Uni- versity of Washington Dental 1967 then attending the Uni- versity of Southern Califor- nia in 1975 where he achieved his -:cer - cate Or- thodontics. H e served in the U.S. Manke Army Re serves from 1968 to 1974 and was discharged at the rank of captain. He married Jan Tuberg on July 8, 1967 at the Faith Lu- theran Church in Shelton. He was seventh of eight children. While attending Irene S. Reed High School, he was class president, a three- sport star in football, basket- ball and baseball. He began his general den- tistry practice in 1967 and his orthodontic practice in 1975, both in Tacoma, until his retirement in 2006. Manke was an avid out- doorsman and sports enthu- siast; he enjoyed his frequent trips to Alaska where he could participate in his favor- ite pastime - fishing with his family and friends. His en- joyment of the outdoors also included hunting, beating, crabbing and shrimping on Hood Canal. His family was the most important thing in his life, his family shared. As a father he was involved in his kid's lives as a coach, a mentor, and a teacher: He coached his kids baseball teams and even played base- ball himself into his 50's. He enjoyed spending time, play- ing games with, reading sto- ries to and taking care of his three grandchildren. He cherished friends some who said his friendship was Molly Josephine Morris, 92, died Sunday, May 22, 2011 at the home of her son in SheltorL She was born April 13, 1919 in Portland, Ore. to Ira Munro Wright and Flora Scott Wright. She graduated from Shel- ton High School. She married Arthur Mor- ris in 1937 and they were one of the pri~ h-on~eoww~ at Island Lake. She was active in the com- munity and was an election beard member. She enjoyed landscaping and maintaining hel~ ho~e at ~the lake, cgmp- ing, fishing and elk hunting. She is survived by sen Wil- liam Arthur Morris (Karen Sandberg) of Shelton and Carol Jo Wadekamper (Ber- nie of Lake Havasu, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Arthur. She was born August 17, 1916 to John and Ida Paine McBride in Bladesworth, Saskatchewan, one of six children. " Her family moved to Linton, N.D. when she was a young girl. She moved to Shelton in 1941. • During the war Morrow years she worked at the Simp- son Plywood Plant and lat- er at the Shelton Laundry. She enjoyed her family and was an active member of the Shelten SeniOr Center. She was a past member of the Eagles Woman's Auxil- iary. She enjoyed camping, clam digging, sewing, play- ing bingo and going to the casino. Lloyd Arthur Phinney Lloyd Arthur Phinney, 74, died May 15, 2011 peacefully at Mason Gen- eral Hospital in Shelton. He was born May 1, 1937 in Steptoe to Cecil and Susie Phinney. He lived most of his adult life in Olympia prior to moving to the Shelton/ Hoodsport area. He graduated from the Univer- sity of W b|ng- ton with a bachelors in science. In 1990, he retired from the i Phinney Depart- ment of Fisheries as Deputy Assistant Direc- tor. He was an.avid Husky football and women's bas- ketball fan, conservation- ist, bird hunter, sport fish- erman and owner of the F/V SU-CE K commercial troll- er out of Sitka, Alaska with his family as crew. He is survived by his former wife, Sharon, his children; Chris and Kelly, Amanda, Brandon and Kirsten, Matt, and Taylor Phinney; grandchildren Jeremy, Jacob, Mason and Nora; brothers, Duane (Bonnie) and Brian (Sue); honorary brother, Bob Hag- er (late Margie); numerous nieces, nephews and many others who considered him family. His firpt wife, Blythe; son, Tommy; daughter, Sal- ly, infant daughter, Amy and his parents preceded him in death. Jacqueane Mae Shnumm Jacqueline Mae Sire' mons, 82, died May 21, 2011 at Alpine Way Retirement Center in Shelton. She was a resident of Shelton, formerly of Forks. She was bern December 17, 1928 in Bellingham to Arthur C. and Lucille (Liv- ingston) Kelm. The family moved to Forks in1942. She graduated in 1946 from Quillayute Valley High School in Forks. She married Simmons November 8, 1947 in Forks. She was extremely proud to be a moth- er and a homemak- Simmons er her fam- ily shared. was a stay at home morn, rais- ing three children and kept the books for her husbands logging business, Simmons Enterprises, before going to work for the Department of Natural Resources as an administrative assistant for 17 years before retiring in 1993. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. She was patriotic, her family said she loved her country and the Fourth of July. She was a volunteer at the Loggers Museum in Forks. She enjoyed attend- grnud hildr ' tivities, yearly trips to Ya- kima to purchase produce for canning, gardening, bak- ing, cooking, razor clam dig- ging, pinochle and watching sports on TV. She is survived by her husband Myron Simmons of Shelton; sons Larry Sim- mons (Carol) of Ronton, Mi- chael Simmons (Roberta) of Long Branch; daughter Dawn Clark (Frank) of Shelton; brother Art Kelm (Janeen) of Sequim; nine grandchildren; five great- grandchildren and numerous, nieces, nephews and cousins.
