Volunteers play an integral role in protecting and improv- ing the health of Mason County lakes. Washington Sea Grant is seeking volunteers to help moni- tor lake water quality for Ma- son County Lakes. Back in the 1990's, Washington Sea Grant and the Washington State De- partment of Ecology trained and provided technical assistance to people that lived on or near a lake to help monitor their lake's health. New lake property own- ers are eager to learn how to monitor and assess the health of their lake and past volunteers are interested in learning new monitoring skills. In conjunction with the Frank Family Foundation, Washing- ton Sea Grant is re-launching the Lake Stewardship program. On Saturday, May 28, volun- teers can learn techniques and protocols for monitoring a lake's health. The session will be hands-on with volunteers learning how to measure various water quality parameters and identify aquatic plants. Previous experience is not necessary; organizers will provide training and some of the monitoring equipment for volun- teers to use on their lake. The information collected by volunteers over the summer will be used to: Determine the current con- ditions of Mason County lakes, evaluate changes in lake health over time, identify problems af- fecting a specific lake in the early stages, provide support for main- taining and restoring lakes and educate lakeside landowners on how to improve lake health. Being a volunteer lake moni- tor is a fun and rewarding expe- rience. Activities include mea- suring water transparency and surface temperature, identifying aquatic vegetation and collecting water samples. All a volunteer needs is direct access to their lake, participate in the five-hour volunteer train- ing and conduct routine (bi- monthly) monitoring from June to October. A volunteer can team up with their neighbors to con- duct the monitoring - it makes it twice as fun. The volunteer training will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, at the Cranberry Lake Research and Education Center.
