TRACK Owl u lifyf r st te championships By DEAN SIEMON Mary M. Knight High School will send athletes to six events in the 1B WIAA Track and Field Championships on May 28 at Eastern Washington Uni- versity in Cheney. The Owls qualified after competing in the 1B District IV Championships on Saturday at Raymond High School. Freshman Hannah Frost won the girls' 800-meter run with a time of 2:44.61. Mary M. Knight head coach Kitty Brehmeyer is optimistic about Frost's chances, who currently sits within the top-eight in 800 meters. "She's totally worked her way up to the elite already and she's middle of the pack," Brehmeyer said. She also took second in the girls' dis- cus throw with a distance of 94 feet and 10 inches. Frost was the anchor for the Lady Owls' 4x200 relay team that won with a time of 2:14.35. The team also included senior Ashley Culver, junior Fayrene Arrington and sophomore Kiah Lofgren. But so far this week, there are con- cerns for Arrington who has been ill and could be unable to run on Saturday. The alternate for the relay team is sopho- more Kelsey Beebe. "I'm just hoping Fayrene recovers," Brehmeyer said. The Lady Owls' also qualified for the state 4x400 relay race after taking sec- ond at districts with a time of 5:37.95. The team consisted of Frost, Culver, Lofgr en and Beebe. Beebe also took second in the 300-me- ter hurdles with a time of 1:07.54. Junior Linda Cook took second in the girls' shot put with a throw of 33 feet and one-and-a-half inches, short of first place thrower Tilly McCrory from Taholah High School by inches (33 feet and nine inches). "If you look at what she threw at state last year, she is already better by three feet," Brehmeyer said. "And she's just a junior." The boys' team was unable to quali- fy anyone for state, as District IV only sent the champion in each event. Top finishes included freshman Col- by Boyce, who took second in the high jump with four feet and eight inches. Sophomore Nick Dierkop finished the ll0-meter hurdles event in 18.75 sec- onds for a second place finish to qualify for state. "We had a small crew this year and those that were there worked really hard," Brehmeyer said. s mmers to swi cl" " " m lnlc in By DEAN SIEMON Two Olympic gold med- alist swimmers are com- ing to Shelton in Septem- ber to teach swimmers young and old. Josh Davis and Ian Crocker are part of 'the :Mutual of Omaha Break- out Swim Clinic, which is held at various locations around the country. Shelton swim club Quick Water has sched- uled the clinic from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Shelton High School pool. Quick Water's Jackie MacAlevy said she took her son to a clinic in Mukilteo back in Febru- ary. "It was such a phenom- enal and inspirational clinic that I wanted to bring it to our club in Shel- ton," she said. "[Davis] is incredibly positive." After finding that costs were feasable, she was able to book the clinic. The $55 per swimmer registration fee is to help cover the costs of the clin. ic. "As long as we meet our quota of swimmers," MacAvely said. "We won't be making a profit, but it would pay for bringing them here." While there are no age restrictions for the clinic, MacAlevy said there are skill requirements to at- tend. "We want [swimmers] to be able to swim and are familiar with the four standard strokes [breast- stroke, backstroke, but- terfly and freestyle]," she said. ~It could be anyone in the entire community." Davis has won five med- als with the United States men's relay team: three golds at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Ga. and two silver medals at the 2000 Summer Olpm,, pics in Sydney, Australia. Crocker has won five Olympic medals but was the world record holder In the 100-meter butter- fly (50.40 seconds) before Michael Phelps broke the record in 2009. Registration is due by September 5 and can be sent to Quick Water Swim Club at P.O. Box 2193, Shelton, WA, 98584.
