Petschrs packed after three. Gale McGrath and his Olympia teammates made a quick exit also. They went home after three. That was the caliber of softball displayed at last weekend's Shelton Invitational at Callanan Park. Manke and Sons, a locally-sponsored, Tacoma-based club, methodically marched through five straight games to wrap up the '75 title. The club made it apparent why it was the 1974 Northwest entry in national competition. The Lowell Nelson-led club, almost ignored as a pre-tourney power, quietly chopped them all down. The finale was a 7-2, seven-inning job over the tourney's Cinderella team, Jess' OK of Shelton. The Met ballplayers came away from this tournament with heads held high. They should have. Their pre-tourney chances of getting to Sunday's championship game were about as good as Euell Gibbons giving up on wheat. The drama began to unfold Sunday morning at 10 a.m. With a 2-1 record going into the 10 a.m. C. B. Hawks hassle, one more loss would have eliminated Chink Hawley's club. Bill Nutt, as he always seems to do, was there to meet the challenge. The spot-pitching righthander shut down the Hawks two-zip on a two-hit gem. Bob Miller, the stump-armed shortstop, continued his assault on his pet peeve: pitchers. He ripped his second shot of the three-day show somewhere into the trees in right center to lead off the seventh. Scott Swisher singled up the middle and came home on Jon Armstrong's two-out double down the left field line to give Nutt his third win of the tourney. Then came the 1:30 p.m. shoot-out with Peterbilt. Nutt, in relief of Dean Johnson, nursed a 5-4 lead going to the top of the seventh. Peterbilt came up with two to take a 6-5 lead. With one gone in the bottom of the seventh, Rob Mills singled to left center. Then the respect for Miller's bat was never more evident. An age-old theory of baseball is to never walk the tying run into scoring position. Worse yet, don't put the winning run on base. Peterbilt violated both rules and got burned for it. They intentionally walked Miller, moving Mills to second. Scott Swisher didn't waste any time. He ripped reliever Bob Ryan's first pitch off his glove to score Mills. Ryan then uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Miller from third. Word was out that the Mets were back in the thick of things. That, along with a seldom-seen Shelton sunshine, brought out a capacity throng for a 4 p.m. battle with Twin Cities, the winner getting a shot at the championship game with Manke and Sons. Again Nutt came on in relief, this time for Jerry Dresher. The 38-year-old veteran, as always, picked the plate apart. Noticeably tiring, Nutt, his teammates and an estimated 1,000 fans watched Miller give it the "Cadillac trot" around the bases three more times. He hit Callanan's "outer-outer" gardens everywhere and at every distance e H sqvarna SAEGER MOTOR SHOP ! 306 Olympic Hwy. S. 426-4602 with his fifth home run of the tourney. N utt and Dresher checked Twin Cities on four hits, preserving a 9-2 win. Then came the inevitable - a 7 p.m. shot at a well-disciplined and talented Manke and Sons ball club. This was the best club in the tournament. The Jess Phillips-Pete Krueger sponsored Mets saw its miraculous comeback shelved for another year. Nutt (of course) relieved Dean Johnson in the first. After Ken Bauer's two-out "double, brother Miffs, ripping a one-out double and scoring on two infield put-outs. Manke's added one in the second, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh to hand a struggling Nutt his first loss of the tourney. Miller appropriately capped the game's scoring with his sixth homer, an off-field solo shot off Manke's Chico Thayer. Little wonder he was the tourney's M.V.P. The All-Tourney Team: 1. Tom Marshall, Manke and Don singled him home for the Sons. game's first run. 2. Tom Thomas, Manke and The Mets countered with Sons. 3. Chico Thayer, Manke and Sons. 4. Lynn Spilseth, Jess'.OK. 5. Bill Nutt, Jess'-OK. 6. Rob Mills, Jess'-OK. 7. Joe Rivera, Twin Cities. 8. Rich Montreal, Peterbflt. M.V.P. - Bob Miller, Jess'OK.
