Highc imbers end track season at state
By DEAN SIEMON
It may not have been the
way Shelton High School
track and field expected the
season would end, but the
Highclimbers were proud of
their 2011 spring season.
Three individuals and a
relay team represented Shel-
ton at the 4A WIAA Track
and Field Championships on
Thursday, Friday and Satur-
day at Mount Tahoma High
School in Tacoma.
Junior Bryton Rodgers
earned a seventh-place med-
al in the boys' pole vault with
a height of 13 feet.
It was a shaky start for
the first-time state competi-
tor. After two misses at the
first height of 12 feet, Rodg-
ers cleared the height in his
last chance.
He was able to clear 12
feet, six inches on the second
attempt and made 13 feet on
the first.
"It took him a while to dial
in his runs," Shelton pole
vault coach Kathy Cole said.
"It started out rough but
he came out and competed,"
Shelton head coach Doug
Sells said. "I saw great com-
petiten."
The 4A boys' pole vault,
which was originally sched-
uled for the late afternoon
on Friday had to be moved to
early Saturday morning due
to the continuous rain.
"The change of time was
h'd to overcome," Coie said.
"It was mentally tough."

provements rom last year,

North Mason High
School senior Tevin Wil-
liams never had a com-
plete track and field sea-
son, missing last year's
2A WIAA Track and Field
Championships due to an
injured hamstring.
But Williams completed
his senior season with a
fifth place finish in the 2A
100-meter dash, finishing
with a time of 11.10 sec-
onds on Saturday at Mount
Tahoma High School in Ta-
coma.
"That's a big deal for
him," North Mason head
coach Jeff Bevers said.
Earlier in the year, Wil-
liams signed his letter of
intent to play football at
Eastern Washington Uni-
versity, the defending na-
tional champions in the
NCAA Division I - Football
Championship Subdivision.
"Now he's got the next
chapter, going on to Eastern
to play football healthy,"
Bevers said.
Two other seniors that
have finished their high
school athletic careers were
Shannon Heiter and Kam-
eron Crosswhite.
Heiter, a returning state
competito r in the girls' jav-
elin throw, finished 10th
overall on Thursday with
a throw of 111 feet and two
inches.
She was not far from
earning a medal; with the
Crosswhite competed at
state for the first time in
the long jump on Thursday,
finishing 13th with a dis-
tance of 19 feet and two and
three quarters inches:
Bevers was proud of the
two seniors who made im-
provements throughout the
season.
"Shannon threw her best
of the season," he said. "And
[Crosswhite] moved up a
few feet from last year."
But the future of the
program also shined when
sophomore C.J. Allen fin-
ished fifth in the 300-me-
ter hurdles with a personal
best time of 39.94 seconds.
In the preliminary round
on Friday, Allen set a time
of 40.03 seconds to take
second place in the first
heat, which was his previ-
ous record.
"I just tried my best ev-
ery race and I finall) broke
40," Allen said.
"It doesn't get better
than that," Bevers said.
Other state athletes for
North Mason include fresh-
man Tommy Marsh, junior
Joshua Hosier, sophomore
Ahron Stroud, sophomore
Evelyn Williams, fresh-
man Tabitha Schwerzler,
sophomore Emma Berg and
freshman Alivia Sandquist.
"So excited about all
these kids," Bevers said.
"Great season and a lot of
kids coming back."

Timbers str00ngg le
on offense loss
By DEAN SIEMON
The Shelton Timbers 17U
American Legion baseball team
has hit a bit of an offensive slump
in their last seven games, includ-
ing a loss to North Thurston on
Tuesday, 6-4, at Shelton High
School.
Shelton (5-10) fell behind ear-
ly after allowing two runs after
three hits were allowed by start-
ing pitcher Levi Goodburn, as
well as two errors from the de-
fense.
"They [errors] just happened
at a costly time and that was the
difference in the end," Timbers'
Joe Strand said.
North Thurston also had three
runs in the third inning and one
in the fifth, totaling 10 hits.
'rhey just had routine hits,"
Strand said. "It was just those
leadoff guys getting hits."
The Timbers used four differ-
ent pitchers, which Strand said
helped keep North Thurston's
batters off balance.
"Once they pick up on a guy,
it becomes a hit parade," Strand
said.
Goodburn lasted two and two-
third innings, allowing three
runs on five hits.
Sam Gerhold fmished the top
half of the third inning and the
fourth, allowing two runs.
} Jared Hayes and Curtis
Wuestner combined for the final
three innings, allowing one hit
and one run.
"After we made some outs, we
realized we could do it," Strand
said.
