The Shelton Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post announced
this week it has voted to
discontinue co-sponsorship of the
Sheiton High School carpentry
class house construction project.
The VFW Post and the
carpentry class have co-sponsored
the project for the past 32 years.
Larry Godwin, chairman of
Korean visits
in Shelton
Kwang Chan Kwak from
Seoul, Korea visited in Shelton
three days last week, staying at
the home of Shelton Police
Patrolman Nick Patterson.
Kwak was in Shelton as a
part of the Friendship Force
program at the same time
Deputy Sheriff Fred Pharris was
visiting in Korea as a part of the
same program.
Kwak arrived in Shelton May
31 and Stayed until June 4 when
he and others visiting in this part
of thestate were scheduled to
take a tour of the Olympia
Brewery and :the State Capitol
gro unds .......
tte planned to leave June 5
to go to New York to visit his
brother, wh 9 is employed by
Greyhound Bus Company there.
Patterson took his visitor on
a ferry trip from Bremerton to
Seattle. Included in the trip were
visits to the Naval Shipyard in
Bremerton and the Space Needle
in Seattle.
the VFW housing committee,
said in a letter this week that the
post had voted at its last meeting
to relinquish co-sponsorship of
the project.
The program, like everything
else, must change as times
change.
"The past few years a greater
strain has been put on the
carpentry class to meet deadlines
set by the homeowner for
subcontractors, and the program
has also been used as a profit
project for the homeowner. This
was never the intent of the
program. It was meant to be an
educational program for the
student and to assist the
homeowner. The class had had
to miss other classroom work to
meet the deadlines along with
working so rapidly, the
educational benefit of the
program has been lost," Godwin
said in his letter.
The carpentry class will
continue to build homes, but
under a new and different
program.
Godwin said the VFW post
expressed appreciation to the
Shelton High School staff and
the many people in the county
who have helped on the program
during the 32 years of its
existence.
The post expressed best
wishes to the carpentry class on
its future program and stated the
post will continue to help in any
way it can.
Commission has approved a
budget transfer for the sheriff's
department to transfer $3,000
from repair and maintenance
supplies to extra help and
$2,000 from operating supplies
to transportation.

Glance at history
The first glance at History
convinces us that the actions of
men proceed from their needs,
their passions, their characters
and talents; and impresses us
with the belief that such needs,
passions and interests are the
sole spring of action - the
efficient agents in this scene of
activity. Among these may,
perhaps, be found aims of a
liberal or universal kind -
benevolence it may be, or noble
patriotism; but such virtues and
general views are but
insignificant as compared with
the World and its doings.
