Cooking is one of Ronna's talents
Ten-year-old Ronna Jacobson
is accomplished in culinary skills;
however, cooking is but one of
her many interests.
"1 like sewing, gymnastics,
horseback riding, languages, and
oil painting," she states. "I work
in ceramics and I ride a
motorcycle."
"I grow plants and do
handicrafts. I could go on and
on!" she laughs.
Ronna, born in Spokane on
January 12, 1968, came to
Shelton as a baby and was reared
in this area. Now a fourth-grader
in Mt. View School, she joined
Camp Fire while a first-grade
pupil.
"In our present group," she
says, "Mrs. Barbara Webber and
Mrs. Pat Radich are leaders. We
learn handicrafts and skills. We
made our own vests and our
banner. We learn cooking, too,
but I first learned at home from
my mom."
Ronna's parents are Inez and
Ronald Jacobsen. She has two
older brothers, Glen and Craig.
Both reside in Shelton. Her
mother taught Cooking for a
Camp Fire group when Ronna
was in second grade.
across form Johnson's Point on
Key Center Peninsula and there
they spend almost every
weekend. Ronna looks forward

'Tm an outdoor girl," she
declares. "One uncle has a ranch
in Snohomish County and
another uncle has a ranch in
Wyoming. I like to visit these
ranches and take care of animals.
I like to ride horses."
Her own pets include a huge
grey-and-white cat called Patches,
a terri-poo named Bridget and a
long-haired dachshund-mix
hamed Brandy. Many of Ronna's
paintings depict animals.
Ronna is learning to speak
Spanish. Math is her favorite
subject and she has a flare for
science. She will attend the
science camp to be held in
Portland, Oregon this summer.
In her social studies class the
students have recently learned of
Australia, and Ronna has
acquired a pen pal in that
country.
"I like to write letters," she
says, "and I can type."
As a four-year-old Ronna
served as mascot for Shelton
Highclimbers.
"That was one of the most
exciting things in my whole
life!" she exclaims. "I had to try
hard to remember the cheers!"
Upon wluch of la.r many
talents will Ronna eventually
concentrate? Into what channels
will her diversified skills be
channelled? She has no plans.
"I'm thinking of being a
doctor some day," she says, "but
I'm not at all sure."
She recommends her Sour
Cream Potatoes:
"They taste just like baked
potatoes with all the trimmings,"
she says.
Her Fresh Fruit Puff Frosting
is versatile and can be used to
top any cool sponge cake or
angel food cake to make a
dessert that is light, delicious and
refreshing.
"The recipe can be varied,"
she explains, " by using different
fruits with gelatins of the same
flavor."
Sour Cream Potatoes
4 large potatoes
4 slices bacon, diced
1 medium sized onion, diced
½ pt. sour cream

Cook potatoes without peeling.
When tender, peel hot potatoes,
place in bowl and cut into large

bacon and onions and pour with
fat over potatoes. Add sour
cream and blend well, seasoning
to taste with salt and pepper.
The potatoes may be refrigerated
overnight for re-heating or may
be served at once. Before serving
garnish with cheese and place in
oven until cheese melts.
Fresh Fruit Puff Frosting

every meal.
"I can take over whenever
it's necessary," she states, "I can

salads, soups, desserts- almost
any sort of meal required."
Although she enjoys cooking,
her hobbies are varied. She

Skookum Rotary Club exchange
student in New Zealand:
May 28, 1978
Hello Shelton,
My name is Rhonda Rose
and I am Shelton Skookum
Rotary club's exchange student.
I have been here in Napier,
Hawkes Bay New Zealand for
almost four months. It seems
hard to believe that I have been
here that long. The time has
gone so fast. We're going into
Winter here now and the weather
is getting colder. The average
temperature has been 8 celsius.
Our May holidays were front
May 6th to the 21st. 1 thought
that this would be a good time
for me to slow down and catch
up on my letter writing, but no
such luck. I was busy the whole
time.
I went to Wellington, the
capitol of New Zealand for a
couple days. Wellington is at the
bottom of the North Island. I
him. I did get to see the
Parliament building and the
"Bee-hive" still under
construction. The "Bee-hive" is
going to be the new parliament
building and government office
building. It resembles a giant
bee-hive.
I also went to Ohope for 6
days. I went with a Presbyterian
minister to attend a Maori Synod
(meeting). When we arrived we
were welcomed onto the marae.
A marae is the meeting house.
The Maori people are the natives
of NewZeaiand. Tie Welcome
ceremony consisted of speeches,
in english and maori, and singing.
The first night we slept in
the marae with about 50 other
people. We got to sleep about
12:30. We were woke in the
morning by chanting, and
singing. Then at 6:45 they held a
church service while almost
everybody was still in bed. It
was a really neat experience to

Last Tuesday I visited the
Napier City Council, to see how
the local government works in
New Zealand. I visited all of the
different departments including
the traffic, rates, treasury, city
planning, library, and city works
department. I even had the
opportunity to see how radar
worked from the inside of a
policeman's car. The whole day
was very enjoyable.
The schooling system over
here, I have found harder when
,it .comes tq YOUr studies anyway.
Something that I flare just
recently found out is that only
60 per cent of all of the people
trying for School Certificate and
University Entrance will get it.
I am now with my second
family, the Schofields. My host
morn is Norah, she works in the
high-school office. My host dad
is Ken and he works in a lawn
mower repair and central heating
shop. I even have a host sister,
Kathryn. She is 11 years old.
The most popular sports at
school are Rugby, soccer, hockey
and netball. We have basketball
too but it really isn't that
popular. I am playing on a
school net-ball team. There are

teams'. T'hey :fl; gi've:
