The U. S. Department of
Agriculture is considering several
proposals to strengthen its
National Forest timber sale
procedures following an internal
review that uncovered
weaknesses that could result in
theft of government logs, it
announced this week.
Among the proposals are a
general tightening of the log
accountability requirements
nationally to include better
identification of Forest Service
logs, tighter controls on log
removal receipts, and more
stringent contract language to
deal with violations.
Forest Service Chief John R.
McGuire said the procedures
would be amended in July after
the proposed changes have been
circulated among interested
parties.
McGuire, concerned that the
system used to account for
National Forest logs might not
be fully effective, appointed a
Forest Service team to examine
the situation last fall. Many of
the team's proposals can be
implemented this year while
others will take longer, he said.
In its report, the team found
that the log accountability
system had become outdated in
some respects. It noted that the
system, in use for many years,
was developed when log prices
were far lower than now.
A second major finding was
that there are several ways that
p.m.,PUD, logs could be misdirected by
httdiatton,o4 officers. Christian Women's Club dithonestoperators.
Monday, Junel2 luncheon, 11:45 a.m,, Masonic McGuire said additional
proposals for corrective action
include:
- An annual audit of each
National Forest by Forest
Service auditors.
- Expanded forest Service
representation on boards of
directors of third-party scaling
organizations.
- Expanded use of tree
measurement where tests prove it
to be most efficient. McGuire
explained that this involves
measuring logs in the standing
tree.

The hole story.
You already know the first part of
the hole story. In the middle of our
garage, we dug a very big and very
simple hole.
But, the second part of the story
is, we filled that very simple hole with
the most sophisticated alignment
had to fly Dennis Graves to the
Hunter factory in St. Louis where their
experts turned Dennis into our expert.
If you want to know how this hole
story ends, you'll have to make an
appointment for your car or truck.
But, don't look so surprised when you
equipment Mason County's ever seen.
It's-the Hunter wheel alignment
machine. And with this new gear, we
can electronically align your front-end,
whether you have a V W "Bug" or a
Mack 18-wheeler.
The third part of the story is, we
L
discover that we offer this new service
at our old price.
No, that very large, simple hole
has no_.L gone to our head.
