Homes can be made more
for mobile service immune to burglaries
State Representative Brad
Owen, D-Shelton, has announced
he will seek funds for a pilot
project to offer mobile state
services to residents living in
remote areas of the Olympic
Peninsula.
Owen said the service would
be run out of a mobile van that
could travel to the smaller
communities on a regular basis
to provide service in the areas of
unemployment compensation,
industrial insurance, business
licensing and social services. He
said the service would require
the cross training of personnel in
these different fields.
"This would be a worthwhile
project for two reasons: First, it
would save fuel - it is more fuel
efficient to send one vehicle 50
miles to service fen people than
to have those ten people each
drive the 50 miles to the
rvices. Second, it is providing
the taxpayer from tbe rural areas
the kind of service he is paying
for."
Owen said rural taxpayers are
currently not getting the same
convenient service as residents of
more populated areas even
though the rural and the urban

resident are paying the same
price for the service.
"It just isn't fair that a
taxpayer in Brinnon has to drive
a great distance to get the same
service that is provided
practically at the doorstep of the
Seattle resident. When you
include the cost of gasoline the
Brinnon resident is paying more
for less service."
Owen said he anticipates
some resistance to his plan from
state agency beads.
"Agency directors are
sometimes more concerned with
protecting their own turf than
with providing the best services
to the citizens. I'm sure a
number of them will view the
cross training of personnel as a
threat to them."
Owen said he will be seeking
federal as well as state funds for
the project.
He said he felt the pilot
program would bring state
services within easier reach of

Mason County Sheriff's Department
"A man's home is his castle" so the saying goes and also he has
the responsibility to protect it and the neighborhood in which he
lives. In many cases tbe homeowner is unaware of how he can
properly and easily "house harden" or make his home and property
more secure and less vulnerable to being burglarized, or the occupants
annoyed and vandaiism redticed.
In recent weeks the sheriff's department has been active in
conducting home protection security surveys of homes within Mason
County and it has become evident that many people are overlooking
the simplest form of protection. That is, using the locks they have on
all exteri(, doors and windows. A lock is not a lock unless it is
locked; it is just a piece of metal and requires the individual to
activate it by turning a key or thumb latch.
Sliding doors and windows may be further secured by placing a
square or rectangular piece of wood in the bottom channel of the
door or window. Casement windows (windows which slide up and
down) may also be made secure by placing a piece of wood alongside
the window, securing it with a piece of velcor or using a key.type
casement window lock.
Most crimes are crimes of opportunity. An unlocked window
invites an intruder. If you eliminate the opportunity, you could avoid
the crime.

Joiirls6 said that the tribes
are concerned about the
unwillingness of the gillnetters to

must be resolved. He further feels
the negative attitude expressed by
the gillnetters could jeopardize
the future success of the

The fish talks were scheduled
