"We wouldn't leave this place for anything!" exclaims Gertrude Depoe as she surveys the peaceful and secluded acres surrounding her home on John's Creek. She and her husband, Ted, with their children moved to the little farm in 1939. "We couldo't keep track of the kids in town," says ~M~s. Depot. The Depoes, born, reared and wed in Eastern Washington, came to Shelton in 1936. Gertrude Depoe is a past president of the Eagles Auxiliary, which she joined in 1960. She now serves as treasurer, and she is chairman of the Past President's Club. She enjoys gardening and sewing and baby-sitting with her 25 grandchildren and four great-granddaughters. She loves to cook and with the cooperation of her family serves holiday dinners for the group in her home. "We have wall-to-wall people!" she laughs. She is a member of Weight Watchers, and meets with the local chapter in St. David's Episcopal Church at 7 p.m. each Tuesday evening. She is justly proud of her slimming efforts, having reduced from 251 pounds to 163½ pounds in 13 months. "I have 43½ pounds more to lose," she remarks, "but 111 make it." She remembers the days when her eight children refused to eat rhubarb. "We had such a lot of it in our garden," she explains, "and no matter how I prepared it, the kids just wouldn't eat it." However, she found in The Journal a recipe that solved her problem. A chapel length train fell from a bow at the empire waistline, and a lace headband held a single-layer chapel-length silk illusion veil.
