TABLES STAND READY for Mason County's first annu-
al Pacific Northwest Shuffleboard Extravaganza at the
casino last month.
Well, so to speak:
They shuffled off
into immortality
The tavern sport of shuffleboard
saw a Shelton man's five-year
dream come true recently at Little
Creek Casino.
Vern Gonzales, the one-time
Shelton softball mainstay whose
Olympic Shuffleboard ownership
was spawned on a proud local
heritage and an abiding dream
of gathering the planet's premier
shuffleboard players for a huge
tournament, struck a deal with
the folks at the casino the end of
last month so he could accommo-
date what turned out to be 117
players on fully a dozen boards
over four full days - aka the first
annual Pacific Northwest Shuffle-
board Extravaganza.
Mason County had nearly a
dozen folks climb the awards ros-
trum. They include Carl Roush,
Jeff Mercer, Jeanette Hohn, Mike
Strayer, Mel Hohn, Gary Dupont,
Mike Waters, Nels Anderson, Joe
Smith and Ryan Strayer.
Vern's wife, Vickie Gonzales,
was tourney organizer. Clark Ken-
hey was assistant director. Boards
were provided by Dan Hitt and
Olympic Shuffleboard's Gonzales
and Gordie Smith, and maintain-
ing the boards' precision adjust-
ment were Kenney and Hitt along
with Dave Keithahan. Lending
overall assistance were Sharon Nu-
gent, Pat Preymak, Linda Walker,
Jennifer King-Christensen and
Melody Marine.
