Cancer survivor's
story inspires book
By NATALIE JOHNSON
When Mike Marshall was di-
agnosed with non-Hodgkin's lym-
phoma, it didn't only affect him,
but touched his whole family.
"I think it made us pretty tight
- I feel like I've got another son,
said Marshall's brother-in-law
Gordon Stewart. "It was hellishly
emotional.~
After six months of serving as
Marshall's day to day caretaker,
Gordon was inspired to write the
novel "Rooms for Rent," which is
about twin brothers dealing with a
traumatic cancer diagnosis.
When early cancer treatments
in Shelton seemed to have little ef-
fect on Marshall's cancer, doctors
in Seattle advised that he move
from Shelton to Seattle to receive
treatment from the Fred Hutchin-
son Cancer Treatment Center, or
"the Hutch."
One of the requirements of his
treatment, Marshall said, was
to live no more than 20 minutes
from the hospital and have a full
time caregiver. Gordon and Carol
Stewart, Marshall's sister, opened
their home to ~Iarshall, and Gor-
don Stewart became his caretaker.
"I like to say we were like shoes
and socks for six months," Mar-
shall said of his relationship with
his brother-in-law.
Stewart said that one of the

the experience brought them to-
gether in ways they couldn't even
imagine. For example, after the
transplant, Marshall took on his
sister's blood type.
"It was one hell of a good experi-
ence,~ Stewart said.
Over time, Stewart's habit of
keeping a journal turned into
creative writing, and his novel
"Rooms for Rent" was born.
While the novel is not strictly
autobiographical and has several
creative embellishments, Stewart
said that it was entirely inspired
by his and Marshall's experiences
and the journal entries.
"I've always wanted to write,"
Stewart said. "I think it turned
out well."
The Stewarts both said that the
novel uses humor to lighten the
heavy topic of cancer treatment.
Marshall hoped that the book
could give comfort to someone
dealing with cancer.
"If somebody could read this...
maybe it could help them," he
said. "There's a lot of cancer survi-
vors walking around, you have to
decide to be one of them - that's
what I did."
Overall, Marshall said he was
satisfied with both the endings of
the novel and of his own story.
"rm thankful it turned out to be
a happy ending," he said. "Some-
times it isn't."
Marshall and the Stewarts
will have a book signing at Sage
Book Store in Shelton on July 30,
and the book is available through

The Washington State Department of
Ecology, Water Quality Program is
currently planning its permit workload for
the coming year (July 1,2011, through
June 30, 2012). We will be making permit
decisions for wastewater discharges in
your community. Permits help protect
water quality by setting limits on the
amount of pollution that may be
discharged into lakes, rivers, marine

permits define monitoring, reporting, and
