By JEFF GREEN
No injuries were report-
ed, but a kitchen fire at the
Little Creek Casino Resort
Monday evening forced an
evacuation of the casino
area of the facility.
Fire District 4 Chief
Bob Burbridge said the fire
was reported at 7:15 p.m.
Thirty-five firefighters from
Mason County fire districts
4, 5 and 13 and Thurston
County fire districts 9 and
13 responded.
The crews found fire
about the stove system in
the resort's buffet kitchen.
The fire had spread up-
wards through the vent sys-
tem to the roof.
Security at the resort or-
dered the casino area evac-
uated while two crews of
firefighters fought the fire,
which was brought under
control within 20 minutes.
The hotel towers at the re-
sort were not affected and
no one was forced to evacu-
ate from them, Burbridge
said.
Burbridge said fire dam-
age was confined to the vent
system and kitchen. He said
damage could amount to
several thousand dollars.
Squaixn Island police offi-
cers, Mason County sheriffs
deputies, Washington State
Patrol troopers and Mason
County Medic One person-
nel assisted with crowd and
traffic control.
Employees were allowed
back into the resort after
two hours. An hour after
that, members of the public
were cleared to return to it.
Burbridge said the kitch-
en and vent system were
under repair and he expect-
ed the buffet to reopen soon.
"Everyone maintained
their discipline," Burbridge
said, adding nine separate
agencies responded to the
incident.
"It all worked out very
well. Yea for Mason Coun-
ty."
