From the top of Mount Jupiter, hikers can see the eastern front of the
Olympic Range.

the Dosewallips on the

Seattle Press Expedition
members named the moun-
tain in 1889. The moni-
ker was an effort to link
the mountain with Mount
Olympus and the many
Greco-Roman mythological
names associated with its
features.
As I left the clearcut
and entered forest canopy,
I noticed the abundance
of salal growing on either
side of the trail. The shade
on this portion of trail was
welcome as the tempera-
ture continued to climb.
I was already worrying
about how much water I
had decided to carry with
me.
I was sucking it down
and could feel my Cam-
elBak getting lighter as I
continued along the ridge
for the next three miles.
The trail reaches a look-
out about four miles into
the hike that offers sweep-
ing views of the Duckabush
drainage below. Hood Ca-
nal and Mount Rainier can
be seen to the north while
The Brothers soar above.
The next three miles to
the peak of Mount Jupiter
will test even the experi-
enced hiker. The trail is
steep and as I approached
the summit I was forced to
navigate plenty of rock out-
croppings and small snow-
fields. The hard work was
well worth it as the eastern
front of the Olympics came
into view.
Examining all the peaks
made me realize how much
more exploring I have to
do.
The Jupiter Cliffs on
the southwest side of the
mountain provide rock-
climbing opportunities.
Jupiter Lakes on the north
side of the mountain can be
accessed by a steep scram-
ble down the rock faces.
As I sat on the summit
and enjoyed my lunch, I
checked on my water situa-
tion. It wasn't good - I had
already drained nearly all
of the three liters I packed
in.
Needless to say it was a
thirsty nine-mile trek back
to the Volvo.
Lesson learned - next
time bring a lot more wa-
ter and hope the gods smile
down upon me.

Trout
Continued from page C-1
into the water.
Thinking to myself,
"What is this dude doing?
Doesn't he know that the
cutthroat are right along
the shore?" I almost tried to
tell him that, but I took it
upon myself to let him learn
on his own.
Soon we were both cast-
ing away, watching each
other as we went. The tide
was about perfect to expose
a new set of eddies for the
fish to hunt in. Wham! I
hooked a nice 12-incher and
landed it and showed off a
little by letting out a "woo-
hoo!"
This only made the fly-
master change gears and tie
on a new fly, as I was sure
he had seen my lure and
was casting with more in-
tent, I hurried up and went
back to casting as well.
"Uh-huh!" a noise came
from down the beach, as the
fly-master hooked into an
even bigger fish. Now it was
on ... We both made cast
after cast and landed four
or five apiece. With each
fish came a new sound and
a more dramatic landing of
the fish.
After an hour the tide
changed and the fishing
turned off, as it does when
the water stops flowing. The
baitfish scatter to safety and
the cutthroat disappear.
Not knowing which one of
us had caught the last fish,
we made a silent nod to each
other and headed off the
beach.
Only one path leads away
from the beach at Walker
Park, so we were destined to
out "So! How'd ya do?"
"Looks like we tied!" he
replied. Funny how I am not
the only one who was keep-
ing track. Smiling, I nodded
back and introduced myself
and the fishing battle be-
tween the fly-master and
the "normal" fisherman took
a backseat to a good, old-
fashioned bull session.
'TChat was the pattern of
the day?" I asked. "Needle-
fish imitation, and yours?"
he questioned. "Needlefish,
the lure with slight orange
on one side," I answered. It
was pretty neat to see that
both styles of fishing were
using the same pattern with
the same result.
Pulling into my son's
baseball practice, I jumped
out of the truck snickering
about the memory of the
fly-master vs. the "normal"
fisherman and thought to
cross paths, and we did. Not myself, "I still won. I caught
changed to a fly that more knowing how to acknowl- three even before he started
closely resembled what I ,,,
was using. Noticing that he edge one another, I blurted fishin.
