Player of the Year
Matt Carleton
Junior - Shelton - Outfielder/Pitcher
About Carleton: Carleton played a pitche and centeriielder for
the Highclimbers in his junior season. He was named a second-team
all-league player as an outfielder for Shelton.
Matt Carleton’s comments: “This season was a grind, one where
I went from a sophomore batting .153, pitching only nine innings, and
reaching the state playoffs, to being one of the two starters for our
team in the back end of the year, increasing my batting average by
100 points, but finishing two games short of state playoffs. While the
stats are certainly better, I know I can improve. With that being said,
Tm most prideful about my defense in center field and my role a
teammate. I try to pick my guys up after mistakes, because we really
are family, and we all have to buy in to committing to getting better if
we are going to make it to the state playoffs again.”
Coach Trevor Cahoon’s comments: “He’s a ‘yes coach’ kind of
guy. He takes' on every assignment that I give him, he came in and
closed a lot of games and then in the playoffs, he be tame a starter.
His stuff off the mound went better and better the year went on
and then his other part is that he plays an amazing center field. He’s
run down balls that I’ve never seen happen at the high school level.
He plays at a really high level. He’s just an all—around great guy out
there.” ‘

Pitcher of the Year
Spencer Coots
Senior - Shelton - Pitcher/lnfielder
About Coots: Coots was named a second-team all—Evergreen Cons
ference pitcher for Shelton.
Spencer Coots’ comment ‘: “It is an honor to receive this award.
It is really nice to be recognized by everybody‘ for all the hard work
'
I have put in. I think our season was a huge success in being able to
make it to the playoffs. It was a huge success for us being able to do
that two years in a row.”
Coach Trevor Cahoon’s comments: “He’s a senior that took on
all the toughest games. He didn’t have very many innings his junior
year and he came out his senior year and he was one of our biggest
innings leaders and always took the ball every week. He’s got 'a
great
fastball and sometimes that was the only thing working for him.
They still missed that fastball so he did a great job at that. He took
a lot of our tough away starts to start the year, then he started being
our home starter. He just took on way tough game we had. His best
game was in the district playoffs against Ridgefield and they were the
number one seed, we lost that game 3-2 and it was all his pitching on
the mound.”
