Girls Golf
Golfer of the Year
Mari Morris
Freshman North Mason
About Morris: Morris was the youngest golfer in the Olympic
League to qualify for the state tournament. The freshman scored her
personal best in the state tournament with a and placed 26th over—
all at the 2A state girls golf tournament at MeadowWood Golf Course
in Liberty Lake.
Mari Morris’ comments: “I was kind of shocked because I didn’t
expect this type of recognition, especially as a newcomer, a freshman.
But I am at the same time g ~ateful and honored to be chosen and
want to make my school and team proud. I’m proud of myself espe-
cially since it was my first year. but I know I can improve. I plan to
work on my short game and also work on building my confidence. Golf
is a tough sport and a lot of it is being confident in yourself. I feel
this
season went well but want to improve upon it. I’m looking forward to V
next year!” . i r . .
Coach James Morris’ comments: “Mari is an all—around athlete ‘
Morgen Shrum, Shelton
and student. She has a 4.7 GPA and received first team all—league
award in golf. Mari is so honored and grateful for the special selec-
tion. She has so much more potential in improving her golf game and
plans to continue to strive for excellence in the coming years.”
Boys Golf . .
Golfer of the Year
Holmes Waltermire .
Senior o Shelton
About Waltermire: Waltermire wrapped up his prep golf career
with his'second straight appearance in the state tournament after
making it through the district IV boys golf tournament in October. He
shot a 76 and 77 in two rounds to finish 16th at the. 2A state boys golf
tournament atLiberty Lake Golf Course.
Holmes Waltermire’s comments: “It’s awesome! I’ve put in lots
ofhard work these past two years to continue improving my game,
and it’s really incredible seeing all the pieces start to click. Everyone
always says I’ve picked the Worst sport, because in tournaments there
is only one winner out of the whole field. Personally, it was a good
season, the weather was fantastic and our group of guys was great.
However, I’ll always have that thought in the back of my mind tellv
ing me you could have shaved a stroke on that hole, that missed putt
could have started my birdie train, etc. I play to win, and when that
doesn’t happen, it has to fuel you to keep working.”
Coach Lorna Martinson’s comments: “The difference between
last year and this year was the time between the season and state.
Holmes took lessons up at Chambers Bay that improved the consis-
tency ofhis swing, and his short game. But the biggest change was
the mental aspect ofhow be mentally approached the game. He was
able to come back after a bad shot, instead of having a had shot lead
to consecutive bad shots. It was really cool to see him mature as a
golfer. Overall, this a great honor for him and one that he absolute—r
ly has earned.”
