A fire likely caused by a lamp destroyed this home on Halrad Road.

A fire completely destroyed
an unoccupied home on Hal-
rad Road on Tuesday, June
14.
The home, at 41 Halrad
Road, is owned by Jeanne
Baker. Family members say
Baker is doing well in re-
hab in Chehalis while her
three daughters, ranging in
age from 8 to 17, are staying
nearby with their grandpar-
ents.
"They currently live with
us on our five acres in Grape-
view," said Lori Schafer, the
girls' grandmother. "Their
auntie and her two sons have
a house there also. We all love
them very much and they will
always have a home here. I
know they also love us, but
it's just not the same. I know
they'd rather come and visit,
and be able to go back home.
We cry for them a lot because
they have been through so
much (including the death
of their father in October of
2010) at such a young age."
Fire District 5 Assistant
Chief and Fire Marshal Mike
Sobotka estimated that the
losses from the blaze amount
to some $60,000.
"It is my belief that this
fire was most likely caused by
the lamp that was left on in
the bedroom," Sobotka wrote
in a report. "The burn pat-
terns are consistent with this
belief. Three sources identi-
fied this area as the point of
heaviest fire."
As things stand now, the
girls, their morn and grand-
parents could use a lot of
help. An account (#152741)
has been set up at Peninsula
Credit Union. Checks should
be made payable to Angela
Lewis, Baker's sister, and
can be dropped off or sent to
the credit union at P.O. Box
2150, Shelten, WA 98584.
