David and Dixie Mesa are living
every parent's worst fear. Earlier this
year, their unborn daughter Sophia
was diagnosed through ultrasound as
having CDH,' or Congenital Diaphrag-
matic Hernia.
"It's heartbreaking - it feels like I
got hit by a truck," David Mesa said.
As the Mesas prepare for the birth
of their child and the ensuing medical
procedures, their friends and family
have come together to throw them a
spaghetti feed and auction to help with
mounting medical bills and mortgage
payments.
The spaghetti feed and auction is
scheduled to take place on June 25 at
4:30 p.m. at the Shelton Elks Lodge.
Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for
kids, and the auction has more than 40
items to bid on.
Karin Young, David Mesa's cowork-
er at Little Creek Casino, said that she
and her coworkers could not help but
step up for the family.
"We're just like a big family," she
said. "This guy has a huge work eth-
ic. This is the only time he's taken off
work. I think he has about two months

of vacation and sick leave time saved
up."
According to cdhawareness.com,
Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia
occurs when, in the first trimester
of pregnancy, the fetus' diaphragm,
which affects lung function and keeps
the intestines and abdominal organs
in place, does not form fully, leaving a
hole, and impeding lung development.
"It was something we'd never heard
of before," David Mesa said. "The hard-
est part is that Sophia is fine until.the
umbilical cord is cut."
The Mesas are in Seattle now pre-
paring for their daughter's birth and
medical treatment. Because of the
diagnosis, neither is able to work full
time, and have fallen behind.
"All our creditors, when we told
them that we were going to run into
problems, they said they could put it
on hold for three months for a medical
emergency," Mesa said,
However, their new home mortgage
was a different story. Mesa said that
the bank was unable to help until they
fell into foreclosure.
"There's a chance to lose my baby
and then my home on top of it," he Said.
Aside from the spaghetti dinner and
auction, donations are also welcome at
