Mike ltagan pitched a
two-hitter Tuesday night, striking
out 12 batters in seven innings as
his Shelton American Legion
team won their first game of the
season, 2-0, over Stadium of
Tacoma.
Also deserving of headlines
was Mike mac, who got his first
hit of the season, a home run, as
the first Shelton batter up in the
game. mac hit one into right field
and it sliced away from the
fielder, and went into the weeds.
He sped all the way home, and no
automatic double was ruled, so he
had a round tripper to his credit.
It was Shelton's first of the year.
ltagan gave up a double
down the third base line in lhc
first inning, and a single in the
sixth, but was untouched
otherwise.
Shelton goi eight hits in the
game. in the two innmgs that
they scored in, they collected
three hits each. mac led off the
game with his home run. then
Curt Stracke singled. Brad Jones
also had a single, but the tuning
ended with no more scoring.
In the second, Ilagan faced
three batters and struck out two
of them, but Shelton could nol
get going either. The third frame
saw tlagan whifl three in a row
and Shetton go down m order.
too.
In the fourth, llagan walked a
man, but retired the sJdc ea~ily.
The hosts scored their only other
run in the bottom of the lomth.
Mike Null led off with a
single. Alter two batlcr~, went
out, Bruce ('die rapped a single to
bring Nutt in. IIc had gone to
second on a passed ball and to
third cm a ground out. Pep Null
also got on alter Cole with a
single, but the tuning ended a
batter later.
Shclton got a single in each of
the next two innings by Curt
Stracke and Iiagan respectively,
whdv Ilaean tamed Stadium from
the mound, lie put the finishing
touches on by striking out the last
batter.
All future home games will
start an hour earlier than
published on the schedule. Due to
darkness problems, the games will
now start at 6:30.

The State Game Commission
will consider rehabilitation of 27
waters proposed by the
Washington State Game
Department, including Tenas
Lake in Mason County.
Rehabilitation on
heavily-fished lowland waters is a
normal part of the fishery
management program used when
some fish populations become
superabundant and depress the
water's production of desirable
sized fish. Rehabilitation clears
the water of competing
populations followed by
replanting of trout.

The Coast Guard recently
released its current search and

With a few notable
exceptions, westside fishermen
found most waters not too
productive as they battled high
winds, cold rain, and in some
places hail, this past weekend.
Lake Cushman, again was hot
for cutthroat trout on Saturday
and Sunday. These fish come
~rom Lake Standstill, a
semi-natural rearing pond area.
State Wildlife Agents note that
these fish are so bright that some
anglers continue to mistake them
for silvers, thereby inadvertently
catching an overlimit of trout.
Anglers may write or phone
their nearest regional Game
Department office for a handy
identification sheet telling the
difference between a trout and a
k okanee, often called a silver
trout.
In southwest Washington,
Swift Reservoir is still producing

fishing for rainbow. Roseiger and

Coast Guard search and rescue
efforts are up almost 20% over
last June.
Most assistance cases are a
direct result of poor preventive
maintenance or a neglect to check
the fuel supply. "The Pacific
Northwest is a dangerous place
for a boater to run out of gas"
says Lieutenant Commander
Hadley, 13th District Boating
Safety Chief. "Every out-of-fuel
case on the coast is potential
fatality; the boat can be in the
surf or on the rocks before we can
get to it."
Hadley also stressed that
seasonal boaters are very often
the victims of a boating tragedy.
The sailor who takes his boat out
for the first time this season
without thoroughly, checking the
engine and its accessories is just
asking for trouble.
Because of the higti~incidents
of breakdowns while thaderway,
the Coast Guard has yecently
published a new pamphlet,
Emergency Repairs Afloat. This
pamphlet is free to anyone who
cantacts the U. S. Coast Guard
Boating Safety Office in Seattle.

only the wire mesh fence keeping
them from going into the

with a few bruises, and his bike

At the Orting short track,
Buck Murphy took first in the

All of the Shelton racers went
to the Elma Fairgrounds on
Sunday to race in the mile oval
there. Placers there were Dan
