After 43Y2 years devoted to a
banking career, Lawrence A.
Carlson, manager of Seattle-First
National Bank, is retiring.
He was born in Shelton, of
parents who came here before the
turn of the century, and he was
raised here. At an early age his
brothers and sisters gave him the
name of "Laurie"; the name has
held fast throughout the years,
and it is as "Laurie" that he is
known.
Mark Reed, at that time
president of the State Bank of
Shelton, gave Laurie Carlson his
first job in 1927.
"I started work," said Laurie,
"feeling that the job would be
good experience. I had no idea
that I'd be around for so long a
time."
In 1934 the State Bank of
Shelton became a branch of the
Seattle-First National Bank.
Laurie Carlson has been manager
of the bank since 1941.
He and his wife Frances live on
Arcadia Point. They have a
daughter, Geraldine Lauber, and a
son, Stanley, both of Seattle.
There are three grandchildren.
Carlson has been active in
many organizations including
Kiwanis and the Chamber of
Commerce. He is an officer in the
UGN, and for ten years was a
member of the city planning
commission.
Golf and fishing are favorite
recreations, and he expects to
enjoy these hobbies more fully in
his retirement. He has been
interested always in historical
writings and in material dealing
with the beginning of our
country. He anticipates with
pleasure the leisure to explore
historical sites.
"Frances and I," said Laurie
Carlson, "plan to do extensive
traveling, and first of all we will
visit the parts of the United States
that we have not yet seen."

A 1966 graduate of UPS,
Kimbel has been an assistant to
Richard D. Smith, dean of

Judge Charles Wright, in
Mason County Superior Court,
granted a motion for a change of
venue from Mason County to
King County in the case of Louis
J. Mottet against Mason County,
Caldwell Machinery Co. and
Harrington Manufacturing Co.
The case involves Motett's loss
of his arm last year. He claims the
injury resulted when a section of
a blade of the county brush cutter
broke off striking him in the arm
while he was on his property at
Fronzo Beach in the Agate area.
Caldwell Machinery Co. is the
distributor for tile brush cutter
and Harrington Manufacturing
Co. is the manufacturer.
Attorneys for Mottet argued
that the plaintiff would call eight
or nine physicians ill tile case, all
from Seattle, as well as the
defendant and other witnesses
being from Seattle, and, that it
would be much more convenient
for all of them if the trial was
held in King County.
Attorneys for the county and
Caldwell opposed the motion.
The attorney for the county
stated that a number of witnesses
from Mason County will be
called, and, that it would be the
desire of the defendant to have
the jury view the scene and the
piece of equipment involved.
This would be extremely
difficult, if not impossible, if a
King County jury was hearing the
case.
Judge Wright, in ruling in
favor of the change of venue, said
scheduling medical witnesses in a
trial is always difficult, and, that
it would appear that quite
possibly the plaintiff would not
be able to present all the medical
witnesses he would like to if the
Seattle doctors would have to
come to Mason County.
