AN EXTRA horse appeared on the scene at the Fair Grounds
Monday morning when this colt was born to the mare owned
by Larry Baze, a member of the Evergreen Wranglers 4-H
Club.

"[he Mason County Fair
(;rounds were well populated
with horses and their young
owners as 47 youngsters and their
animals gathered for a three-day
trafning session.
"The youngsters are members
of the three horse 4-1t Clubs in
the county, the l',vergreen
Wranglers, the Valley Vaqueros
lrom the Skokomish Valley and
the Green Acres from the Allyn
area.
Instructors for the sessions
have incuded Joe Johnson,
Extension Livestock Specialist
from Washington State University
at Pullman, who showed the
ers
youngsters pointers in
equitation, horse perf~)rmance
and equipment.
A session on general horse
care, health and feeding was given
by Packy McMurry, Washington
State ttorse Breeder's Association
field representative.
From Olympia were Mrs.
ttelen l)utton, who showed the
youngsters about judging and
conformation and Jim Taylor,
who gave a session in grooming
and showmanship.
(;round driving, lunging and
safety in handling were the
subject of the session taught by
Randi Tollefson, Elma.
Lessons
The youngsters and their
horses arrived at the Fair Grounds
Sunday afternoon and concluded
their sessions and went home
Wednesday.
They camped at the Fair
(;rounds for the time the sessions
were in progress.
The afternoon activities
Monday and Tuesday included a
swim in the lake on the John
MacRac property.

IIOODS PORT-Patience is
rewarded, for llene Ager, for after
three years of careful coddling
and watching the southern
Magnolia tree in her front yard
has burst in bloom, presenting not
only a beautiful sight, but much
satisfaction to llene who went
through much effort to receive
this tree. Several years ago Mr.
and Mrs. Ager saw a flower in the
window of the flower shop of the
late Mrs. Forest, in Shelton, and
inquired about it, to find out Mrs.
Forest had two of these beautiful
trees in her back yard behind the
shop. At this time and for three
years later, Mr. and Mrs. Ager
tried in vain to purchase one of
these trees, finally in 1967 Les
won out and llene received her
much dreamed about tree April
21, 1967 for her birthday. This
did not end llene's concern for
the remaining tree in Mrs. Forest's
yard however, as she had gained
information the property had
been sold, to be cleared for the
Capitol Savings and Loan
Building. llene wrote a letter to
the President of Capitol Savings in
Olympia telling him of the beauty
of the blooming magnolia and
graciously this man had the tree

4-H HORSE CLUB members moved their rn
ring during one of the equitation
three-day training session at the Fair Ground
MRS. HELEN Dutton of Olympia, center, goes over his horse
with one of the young 4-H members during a class on judging
and conformation. Standing behind Mrs. Dutton holding the
horse is Mrs. Tulla Kimball, leader of the Evergreen Wranglers
4-H Club.
Shelton will be the host city
for a regional Jaycee softball
tournament in early August.
Nineteen Jaycee chapters fron|

to attend tile two-day
tournament.
Two couples from Shcllon are
now attending lhe United Slates
Jaycee National Convention in St.
Louis, Missouri. Mr. and Mrs. Bob
Strachila and Mr. and Mrs. Bob
Mills are allcnding the 50lh
Anniversary convenlion of the
founding of the Jaycees.
Plans are now being formed
for two Safe and Sane fireworks
stands for Independence Day
weekend. The stands will be
located at the Old Burger Pit and
in the Mountain View area.

moved to a protected corner, but
tragically the magnolia died. Now
after fearing hers was lost but not
giving up llene and Les's patience
has indeed won out, and the
bloom is a beauty to behold.
Out of Hospital
George C. Belmont Sr. is
home and doing nicely after his
recent surgery at Virginia Mason
Hospital in Seattle.
Mrs. Lyle Linton, Lake
Cushman, has returned to their
mobile home from Gray's Harbor
Hospital and is doing great after
her surgery. Gladys Linton's
daughter, Ruby Ann who came to
stay with her mother from Omak
and ended in the Mason County
General has also been released. A
speedy recovery to you all.
Anniversary
Their second wedding
anniversary was spent by Mr. and
Mrs. I. Stannert working on their
already very nice cabin at Minerva
1. During the week Iris and lrv
live in Seattle where lrv is
employed.
Visitors
The Kenneth Maleckis from
Kent, and the Bob Maleckis of
Boise, Idaho, all arrived to spend
a short holiday with their mother,
Agnes Malecki of Shelton. Bob
and Ken are the brothers of
Frances Frint, so much of their
little time was spent on the canal
much to the delight of little Jo
and Theresa Malecki, from Boise.
Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Ditterick,
Shelton were out Hoodsport way
entertaining Mr. and Mrs. H. G.
Wakhela and son Jon from
Longview, and also a service
buddy of the Ditterick's son
Terry, Frier Fitzgerald, who has
been transferred to Ft. Lewis. A
great time was had by all, and all
will remember Frier's remark
when told they were going
geoduck hunting, "What kind of
gun do you use". Frier is from
Rhode Island.
Mr. and Mrs. George Belmont
are having a houseful this week
and loving it, for their daughters,
Mrs. R. Springer and daughter
Suzanne, along with daughter
Mrs. P. Connell and son Patrick -~7- I
traveled from Bainbridge. ;2&~; ,,2', 17~. ..........
Mabel and Hap Wagner arrived
this weekend pa~t to visit with
Mabel's sisters, Mrs. Ester Jarvis
and Ethel. Hap and Mabel reside
in Seattle now but are planning to
move to this area.
Mrs. Mary Ager, Portland, and
her son and his family, the S.
Sonnenburgs from Hunting Park,
California, stopped by for a
dinner date with the Les Agers.
Birthday Party
For Mrs. Robert Rowe,
Potlatch was celebrated at the
home of Edward Jenners in
Shelton. It was an afternoon
party which included a very fine
luncheon and a gathering from
many areas in the Jenner's home.
Those attending were Mrs. Nina
Miller, Union, Pearl Schmidt,
Potlatch, Alice Dorman,
Panorama City, llene Ager,
Hoodsport, and Frank Mclntyre
also Hoodsport.
Viet Nam Again
SP/4 Arden Locke's 30 day
furlough has ended to the dismay
of many especially his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Vander
Weygen, Holliday Beach. Arden,
Art to his buddies, has completed
one tour in Viet Nam but
extended and will return to
DaNang for another six months
and should be home for another
furlough in February 1971.
