Date President The Shelton Merchants, off to a blazing 7-0 win-loss record, appear to be headed for their first City League softball crown. Manager Bob Ashley's club, blessed with good pitching and outstanding team power, will be hard to catch through the remaining nine league games as it holds a commanding two-game lead over Manke and Sons. Sunday night the Merchants power-laden club recorded two more league wins and matched that with a convincing win Monday night of an 1 1-4 conquest of Dick Laney's Hoodsport entry. in Monday night's encounter, the Merchants went to work early. After Laney retired the first two hitters in the Merchant first, Phil Adams singled to left. Jim Johansen promptly scored Adams with a two-out double to right center. Norm Anglin singled to center to open the second and after Ed Adams popped out, Gene Benedict stung one to left, moving Anglin to second. They both scored on Tom Martin's booming double down the left field line. Ray Krumpols capped the inning with a double off the boards in left center, scoring Martin. The Merchants put it away in the third. Johansen singled to left as did Ed Adams. They both moved up a base on Anglin's shot up the middle. Jim Corey ripped a double to left center scoring Johansen and Adams, with Anglin moving to third on the play. Gene Benedict then hit a bouncer to second, scoring Anglin. The Merchants added one more in the fourth and one in the sixth to record their seventh straight City League victory. Jim Johns, Hoodsport's young first baseman, ripped Martin and Lloyd Murr for three straight hits, Tireless Bill Nutt pitched in four games last weekend in an invitational fastpitch tournament in Olympia as his Jess' team split the four contests to finish out of the running for a place. Friday night Nutt went 11 innings before his Mets beat the Twin Cities Tavern of Longview 2-1. In Jess' first game on Saturday, Petschel's Meats of Seattle (1973 Northwest champs) stopped the Mets 2-0. Nutt pitched the loss and his teammates came up with only one hit. Nutt returned to the mound later in the day and hurled a 4-2 win over Westgate Builders of Seattle. In Saturday's final game, the Mets lost to Brusco's of Longview, 6-0. Tom Fredson started at pitcher, left the game with the score 0-0 and was relieved by Nutt. Jess'. a Puget Sound League division leader, split a pair of league games with the Lacey team in Lacey last Thursday evening. Nutt pitched the opener, which the Mets won 7-6 and Fredson pitched the second game, an 8-4 loss. Jess' has home doubleheaders against the Olympia Senators on July 9 and Shelton's OK Roofers on July 11. They start at 7:30 p.m. The team currently has a 20-14 win-loss record and is 9-3 in Puget Sound League play. Nutt, Jess' workhorse on the mound, is 12-10. // Sports twenty-five years ago.
