MARTIN AUSETH, Mason County Grange Deputy, receives the "Grange
Leader of the Year" award from State Grange Master Jack Silvers. Mrs.
Auseth, southwest district Junior Grange chairman, looks on.
The warm weather has melted back some of the snow in the
backcountry. The last reports from the district are:
SNOW LAKE is frozen completely. Avalanches have occurred
around the lake.
WAGONWHEEL LAKE (4150') is frozen. Avalanche danger is
evident above lake.
MILDRED LAKES (4,000") are frozen, with the exception of about
10 percent of the Lower Mildred. Depth of snow about 4 feet.
LOWER LENA (1800') is free of snow and ice and heavily
populated.
UPPER LENA is snowed in. Route finding is difficult.
HAGEN LAKE is frozen in with deep snow pack. Avalanches have
occurred at lake.
MT. ELLINOR TRAIL (812) is blocked by snow at the trailhead.
Expect snow along trail.
MT. WASHINGTON TRAIL (800) is blocked by snow two miles
below trailbead on F.S. Road 2419.
JUPITER RIDGE (809) hikers will hit snow line between 3,000 and
4,000 feet.
JUPITER LAKES are frozen with about 4' of snow at lake.
DUCKABUSH TRAIL (803) is impassable to stock ¾ miles short of
the park/forest boundary. Hikers will reach snowline below LaCrosse
Pass trail junction. Route finding is difficult beyond this point.
Fishing appears to be slow throughout the ranger district. Very few
"success" reports have made it back to the ranger station.
Campgrounds have been filling up over the weekend. More people
seem to be camping so far this season.

The decision whether to issue
a permit will be based on an
evaluation of the probable impact
of the proposed activity (in the
public interest. That decision will
reflect the national concern for
both protection and utilization of
important resources. The benefit
which reasonably may be
expected to accrue from the
proposal must be balanced against
its reasonably foreseeable
detriments. All factors which may
be relevant to the proposal will be
considered; among those are
conservation, economics,
aesthetics, general environmental
concerns, historic values, fish and
wildlife values, flood damage
prevention, land use classification,
navigation, recreation, water
supply, water quality and, in
general, the needs and welfare of
the people. No permit will be
granted unless its issuance is
found to be in the public interest.
Comments on these factors
will be accepted and made part of
the record and will be considered
in determining whether it would
be in the best public interest to
grant a permit. Comments should
reach the Seattle Corps office not
later than July 15 to insure
consideration.
