HARST1NE ISLAND -
Earlier this month the
Community Club, due to the lack
of interest by its members,
decided not to hold the Labor
Day Dance this year. For as nrany
years as this reporter can
remember this event has been an
annual affair here on the island.
Thus last Friday evening when
a handful of Grangers gathered at
the hall for their regular June
meeting most of those present
voted to "field" said dance that
the Community Club had
"tossed" into the outfield the
week before.
On other business of the
Grange: the membership will be
looking forward to hearing from
the State Grange delegate next
meeting. At the time of this
meeting Everett Simons was still
attending the convention session
in Aberdeen on its fifth and final
day.
Next month (July) the Grange
meeting will be held at the Bob
Barnett residence. It will be
preceded by a potluck picnic
supper starting at 6:30 p.m.
Last-minute food arrangements
will be made at that time. The
Home Ec chairman will be
looking for food or donations for
this fund-raising event.
Just prior to the Grange
meeting an accident occurred at
the Bob Barnett residence. There
were no injuries involved and the
only damage which occurred was
to the vehicle involved. It seems
that the brakes on Bob's van
failed and it rolled down the hill,
flipping it over and totaling the
van completely.
Thursday evening Bob and
Dorothy Barnett travelled down
to Aberdeen to join Everett
Simons in taking the sixth degree
at the Rose Drill.
This past Saturday 14 friends
and relatives of Helen Lammers
travelled to the Gull Harbor (out
of Olympia) to the home of
Shirley Root. All present were
celebrating Helen Lammers"
birthday, just a bit prematurely,
because Shirley and her husband
Roy have a fishing date this
coming weekend, the real date of
Helen's birthday.
The latter part of last
weekend low tides were the main
subject of conversation in and
around the Puget Sound area.
Especially the foregoing was the
case to seekers of the elusive
geoduck.
tlere at Spencer Cover it was
pretty much like Grand Central
Station as fiiends and relatives
gathered to try their luck for the
King Clam. Among those present
were Jerry Singleton and two of
his friends; George and Elizabeth
Nelson of Seattle; the Stan
Yateses and their guests, niece
and her husband, Dick and Lila
Carmichael, who were guests of
the Yateses for a couple of days,
of Snoqualmie; and also Spike
and Marge Hlibokie, friends of the
,Glenn Yateses from Shelton.
Thursday afternoon Carla
Meacham delivered Lisa Yates
back home after she and Rebecca
Meacham had spent three days in
Seattle as the guests of
Rebecca's grandmother, Julie
Duncan. The two girls were
treated to sightseeing trips to
Woodland Park Zoo, Golden
Gardens and the Seattle Center.
Carla and her four youngsters
stayed overnight here on the
island. All the smallfry were
delighted to be able to sleep in a
real Indian teepee, as guests of
Carla's friends, Nancy and Steve.
Carla and baby daughter Sara
camped all night in the house
with Steve and Nancy. The kids
really had the time of their lives
being able to keep a fire going all
J
night inside the teepee! Friday
evening Jerry Meacham drove
down to the island to join his
family, so he and Cada could go
property hunting.
Eadier this month Doris and
Wilbur Jacobson took a trip down
to Oregon. Doris was the first to
leave. She took a bus to Eugene,
as the family trailer and also
pickup were still awaiting their
arrival back in Eugene. Doris
caught the bus May 31 to Eugene
to go down ahead of Wilbur to see
if she couldn't lend a helping
hand to daughter, Donna Marx. A
little over a week later Will and
daughter, Eileeo Meyers, drove
down to join the others and be on
hand for the graduation of the
brother, Steve. Guest speaker at
the graduation exercises was
Wayne Morse, former senator
from Oregon.
Wednesday Doris and Wilbur
headed for Crescent Lake in
Oregon, one of their favorite
camping spots. They camped
there three nights. Saturday Doug
and Donna joined them to spend
the night. Sunday Doris and Will
headed north for home and Doug
and Donna headed south to
Eugene and home.
Doris and Wilbur spent
Sunday night at a state park near
Hood River and returned home to
the island Monday.
