Flag burning
should be
privately
Editor, the Journal
When referring to our
United States Flag, even in
the word '~Flag" by itself, the
'~" should be capitalized.
Mr. Spradlin's front page
article about the U.S. Flag
did not mention why three
U.S. Flags were retired. Is the
reason they were badly worn?
What could be another reason?
The Flag on the front page
picture does not appear to be
worn at all. What did their fi-
nal "one final inspection" show?
When a tattered flag is
to be disposed of, the U.S.
Code explains that it is to
be destroyed privately, in a
dignified way, preferably by
burning. It is proper to merely
burn it without ceremony
and dispose of the ashes as
you would any other ashes.
So don't feel guilty ffthat is
what you do. A ceremony
of any kind for burning our
Flag really seems inappro-
priately strange and not the
least patriotic! Who dreamed
that idea up, celebrating the
burning of our United States
Flag as though making this
Flag burning a pubhc event
was something to be proud of?.
Ask a friend or neighbor, "Have
you heard about D&L Auto?"
Our reputation is where most of
our business comes from. Pictured:

I hope Mason County never
becomes well-known for the
United States Flag burning
that goes on there!

What is our
city doing?
Editor, the Journal
A new business comes to
town to provide a service to
those of us who live here, and
this is how our city govern-
ment treats them? when I
moved to Shelton 37 years
ago, if you did not get to Ev-
ergreen Square before 9 a.m.
you would not find a place to
park, downtown was like a
party every weekend.
Look around you now, City
Commissioner Dawn Pannell.
Our city is dead. why give
someone who is bringing new
life to our commum'ty such a
hard time? Maybe it's time
that the rules are changed. I
don't live in the city limits, but
ifI did, I would do everything
I could to change the city gov-
ernment's outlook on bringing
in new business.
Sometimes rules have to
be changed -- life changes,
times change, government
changes. We need to work
together to save our town, not
divided, but together. And I
want Commissioner Pannell
to know that I always play by
the rules. Save Shelton!
