Olympic
park seeks
volunteers

The Olympic National
Park is seeking volunteers
to help with the Elwha Riv-
er restoration.
Volunteers are needed to
assist with native seed col-
lection, growing and caring
for native plants at Olym-
pic National Park's nursery
and replanting former Lake
Mills.
This summer, there are
opportunities at the Matt Al-
bright Native Plant Center,
located east of Port Angeles
in Robin Hill Farm County
Park. There, volunteers are
invited to help transplant
native seedlings, clean and
sow seed and care for the
thousands of natives that
will be planted in former
Lake Mills this fall. Regular
voluteer drop-in days at the
nursery are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Mondays and Wednesdays.

Ira Cook
Iva Marie Cook, 93, died
June 13, 2012, of natural
causes in Weiser, Idaho. She
was a former resident of
Shelton.
She was born on Feb. 16,
1919. A resident of Cuprum,
Idaho, she started her life
in Tulsa, Okla., the first of
three children born to Clyde
Childress and Willie May
(Herrmann) Landsaw.
While still a young baby,
her first of many ventures
found her in Corpus Christi,
Texas, with her parents. She
attended grade school while
there in an old-style, two-
story school house with a fire
escape on the outside of the
second story.
She was joined by two
more siblings, Mary and
Clyde Jr. Clyde Sr., her
father, was a brick layer
by profession and with the
events of the times (the De-
pression years), work was
hard to find.
She also lived in Albu-
querque, N.M., and gradu-
ated from Albuquerque High
School on July 24, 1936.
She was married to Henry
Cook at the Cook's ranch on
Bull Creek, Pecos County,
N. M. This union took place
Aug. 15, 1936.
In 1938, the family moved
to Coulee City. Two years
later they moved to Shelton.
The couple started a whole-
sale and retail floral dis-
tribution business for local
florists. This business was
called Cook Plant Farm, and
lasted from 1940-1971.
In 1970, she lost her hus-
band and moved to Olympia
"with her mother, where she
worked at Barnes Floral the
next year. Her father was
killed in an auto accident in
1961.
Over the course of the
next few years, she worked
for her daughter at Paul's
Flower Shop in Bremerton
and then at the Kitsap Re-
gional Library. She also had
a small greenhouse and she
spent many hours propagat-
ing plants from cuttings.
In 2000, she moved to
Council, Idaho, and by 2003
she moved to Cuprum,

daughter, Leila Cornell and
husband Gunny; one son;
11 grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren.
She was proceeded in
death by her parents, sister,
brother, husband and one
son in 2011.
At her request there will
be no service.
Ronald Miehalski
Ronald R. Michalski, 72,
a long-time resident of Lilli-
waup, died May 30, 2012, in
Mesa, Ariz.
He was born on Dec. 11,
1939, in West Fargo, N.D.,
to Edmund and Barbara
Michalski,

chalski
served in
the Army
Ronald and the
Michalski Washing-
ton State
National
Guard for a combined 30
years. His rank upon dis-
charge was Chief Warrant
Officer 4, retired. His career
ended at Camp Murray,
where he was an auditor.
While serving in the Army
in Germany, he became a
mountaineer, climbing many
of Europe's famous peaks
and loved shamng his memo-
ries of his climbing years, his
family shared.
He married Jeannette
Kistle on Sept. 25, 1988, in
Puyallup.
Michalski was a member
of the Elks Lodge in Apache
Junction, Ariz., and was
originally with the Tacoma
Elks Lodge.
He was a proud and hun-
ored Eagle Scout in the Boy
Scouts of America, Troop
No. 27 in Tacoma. He vol-
unteered at the Good Life
Resort in Arizona, where he
and Jeannette wintered.
Michalski also loved water
aerobics.
He is survived by his wife
Jeannette; daughter Kath-
ryn Young of Auburn; son-in-
law James Young of Auburn;
step-son John Kistle and
wife Teri of Long Beach, Ca-
lif., step-daughter Roseanne
Keller and husband Rusty of
Whitehal, Penn., and a num-
ber of step-grandchildren.
A graveside memorial ser-
vice will take place at Wil-
lamette National Cemetery,
Portland, Ore., at a later
date. The private service will
have full military honors.

Johanna Wiles
Johanna N. Grove Wiles,
76, died on June 19, 2012.
She lived in and near Shel-
ton and Olympia her entire
life.
She was born on Aug. 25,
1935, in Bushman Lake,
Wash., and was raised in
Tenino.
She married Gene Wiles
on April 20, 1951.
Wiles worked as a CAN
and was a long-time member
of the Moose Lodge and the
VFW. She enjoyed spending
time with her family, espe-
cially her grandchildren.
Wiles is survived by her
husband, Gene, of 61 years;
sons Duane, Russell, Edwin
"Pete" and his wife Mary;
daughter Anette and her
husband Myles; long-time
friend Cliff; and Dorie; and
her grandchildren.
A celebration of life is sched-
aled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday at
the Lacey Community Center
at 6729 Pacific Ave. S.E.
In lieu of flowers, the fam-
ily suggests donations be
made to the St. Jude Chil-
dren's Hospital.
Clara Adair
Clara V. Adair, 77, died
June 16, 2012, at home in
Long Beach, Calif.
A 23-year resident of
Long Beach, she was born
in Shelton on June 11, 1935,
to John and Mabel (Powers)
Marshall.
She was a bartender for
many years in Shelten. She
worked for the Town Tavern,
the Pastime Tavern and the
Log Cabin
~Tavern.
After
moving
to Long
Beach in
1989 to be
closer to
her daugh-
ter, she
Clara worked for
Adair Target for
15 years
until her
retirement.
She was always a very
hard-working woman and
trained many a young woman
to be tough little bartenders.
She expected the very best out
of them and nothing less. She
had a good sense of humor
and knew how to have tim.
She enjoyed Disney, movies
and was an avid reader. She
loved dogs and will be missed
by her beloved "Shaggy."
She is survived by her
daughters Bobbie Sipe of
Craig, Alaska, and Ann
Adair of Long Beach, Ca-
lif.; her sister Irene White
and her grandchildren
Clarita Montiel, Morgan
Sipe and Garrett Sipe as
well as numerous nieces,
nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in
death by her parents, broth-
ers Chet Marshall, Brady
Marshall and Vernon Mar-
shall and sisters Christine
Ellison, Lorraine Whitener
and Marie Archer.
A celebration of life will be
held at a later date.
