Team playing in Maltby Tourney this weekend By EMILY HANSON emi/y@rnasoncounty corn The Mason County Youth Baseball Association Colt-Palominos team lost another doubleheader last weekend. On Sunday, the Colt-Palominos fell 5-1 and 11-1 to Mountlake Terrance at Mason County Recreation Area. "The team is struggling with jell- ing together," head coach Jorge So- lano said. "A lot of teams we're play- ing against have played together for a couple of years. The team is aware of it and trying to get the 'working together' thing done." Solano said the Colt-Palominos have the baseball fundamentals down solidly but just need to learn to work together. In the first game against Mountlake Terrance, Jack McQuarrie pitched with six strikeouts. "A lot of scores we're getting are on errors," Solano said. "They're getting the ball in play when they hit. When we hit, we're getting the bat to the ball, but hitting to where they are." Jake Beck led the team with one double and one run. "Beck is really coming along as far as hitting goes," Solano said. In the second game, Ben Solano pitched for one inning with one strikeout and allowed four runs. Josh Drinkard came in as relief for the remainder of the game. "Drinkard pitched solid in the sec- ond and fourth innings," Solano said. Six Shelton girls from the rugby 15s team are pla~ng for the Washington Loggers. Kaitlyn Woods, Katie Chap- man, Ivanna Bell, Alexis Johnson, Diandra Nault and Britney Young are on the state squad. Last week, the girls trav- eled with the state team to Idaho for the Great North- west Challenge where they played against teams from Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Or- egon, Northern California and Montana. "The girls played really well on Saturday, they beat Colorado and Utah," Shel- ton co-head coach Kasey Robbins said. "We won two games and lost two games. We made it through the first bracket but not the second bracket." Robbins is also an as- sistant coach for the state team. Robbins said techni- cally, the Washington girls' all-star team took third place at the tournament, but that trophies were not awarded. "I'm proud of the girls for sticking with it and continu- ing to improve themselves ..... andrepresent Shelton Well," she said. Shelton boys DeShon Bell and Brian Nault are playing on the boys' all-star team, which won the Great Northwest Challenge last weekend in Idaho against teams from Idaho, Montana and Oregon. Shelton co:head coach Chris Nesmith said the Washington team won with a point differential of 104- 7 and that Bell was a high scorer for the team. "DeShon played very well and there's a possibil- ity he could be invited to the High School All-American Camp," said Mark Sullivan, the head coach of the Wash- ington boys' all-stay team. "I think Bell got five tries in four games over the week- end." Sullivan said the All- American camp, which in- cludes a tryout for Team USA Rugby, will take about 75 athletes from across the See Rugby on page C-3 ting Course hos ::the MGH Foundation the surrounding property, the Alder, brook Resort and the marina.
