A WIDE ARRAY of seasonings close at hand are an important feature of
Bernice McDonald's kitchen.
Bernice McDonald
"We're a close family," she
remarks. "I've always maintained
a goal of getting along with my
sons- and daughters-in-law. And
they're all great."
Bernice McDonald has
recently been forced to give up
some of her community activities
by ill health. Until early this
year she was an active member
of the Legion of Mary, a
devotional and service
organization of the Roman
Catholic Church to which she
belongs.
"It was nearly forty years
ago that I joined as an auxiliary
member," she recalls.
For 15 years Bernice visited
nursing homes daily, providing
transportation to appointments,
church and outings for residents.
On summer Sundays she usually
took blind convalescents to the
outdoor band concerts in the
city parks, and she enjoyed
taking people without family
h6me to dinner:
Bernice McDonald, known to
her family as "Cookie
Grandma," is an expert at coping
with the vagaries of diet
requirements, while catering to
the tastes of frequent visitors.
Living close to several
members of her large family,
Bernice is often called on to
make favorite recipes. She likes
main dishes that use local
seafood and salads that keep
well.
Family is of prime
importance to Bernice
McDonald. She moved here from
Everett, where she was born and
where she made her home for 79
years, four years ago.
"My daughters wanted me to
be closer after my husband's
death," she explains. A daughter
and son-in-law, Frances and Joe
Leister, live at Valley Center.
Annother daughter, Bonnie
Smith, died this spring; of her
next-door son-in-law, Floyd
Smith, Bernice says, "He's. as
lar as 6fid"bf my own children.

Adams gets law degree
Dianna Timm Adams,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill
Timm of Union, was among 165
students to receive the Juris
Doctor degree at the University
of Puget Sound School of Law's
spring commencement exercises
held recently in Tacoma.
Washington Attorney General
Slade Gorton delivered the
commencement address and was
recipient of an honorary doctor
of laws degree.

and a few drops of yellow
coloring, beating until well
blended. Four tablespoons equal
a large egg, and has only 25
calories," Bernice says.
"A nurse gave me the recipe,
and it's even good for scrambled
eggs and omelettes."
The yellow food coloring was
Bernice's own addition to the
recipe. "The eye has a lot to do
with your appetite," she
maintains. "You can live without
some seasonings if things look
appealing."
Cookie's Butterhoms
1 cake yeast
1 Tbsp. sugar
1 C. scalded milk, cooled
4 C. flour
4 eggs
½ C. sugar
1 tsp. salt
Combine yeast, sugar and milk,
adding about half the flour. Let
sponge rise, then add remaining
ingredients, kneading until stiff.
Let rise until double in bulk.
Then roll out, cut thin strip;
twist and coil into loose spirals
on greased cookie sheet. Let rise
and bake in a medium oven.

"I got more out of it than I
ever put into it, I can tell you
that," she declares emphatically.
"I just putter now," she says.
"I'm like Harry Lauder's father
who went to the doctor
complaining of a cough.
" 'How auld be ye, Angus?'
asked the doctor.
" '93.'
" 'Awa' home wi' ye,' said
the doctor, 'An' be glad ye' can
cough at yer age!' "
Making special cushions for
bedridden patients, sewing and
crocheting still keep her
occupied. She plays the organ
and maintains a flower garden,
and she looks out for a
long.haired cat named Dusty.
"She's a tramp," Bernice
laughs. "She just appeared and
adopted me, and now she's
deposited a nestful of kittens
somewhere - darned if I can
find them, though."
A diet restricted to eliminate
sugar, cholesterol and salt poses
some challenges to Bernice's
cooking skills. One of her many
solutions is a recipe for "phoney
eggs" which she says beats the
high cost of the egg substitutes
available in stores.
"I mix six egg whites, a
quarter cup of non-fat powdered
milk, two tablespoons of corn oil
