Bernice McDonald "We're a close family," she remarks. "I've always maintained a goal of getting along with my sons- and daughters-in-law. And they're all great." Bernice McDonald has recently been forced to give up some of her community activities by ill health. Until early this year she was an active member of the Legion of Mary, a devotional and service organization of the Roman Catholic Church to which she belongs. "It was nearly forty years ago that I joined as an auxiliary member," she recalls. For 15 years Bernice visited nursing homes daily, providing transportation to appointments, church and outings for residents. On summer Sundays she usually took blind convalescents to the outdoor band concerts in the city parks, and she enjoyed taking people without family h6me to dinner: Bernice McDonald, known to her family as "Cookie Grandma," is an expert at coping with the vagaries of diet requirements, while catering to the tastes of frequent visitors. "A nurse gave me the recipe, and it's even good for scrambled eggs and omelettes." The yellow food coloring was Bernice's own addition to the recipe. She plays the organ and maintains a flower garden, and she looks out for a long.haired cat named Dusty. "She's a tramp," Bernice laughs. "She just appeared and adopted me, and now she's deposited a nestful of kittens somewhere - darned if I can find them, though." A diet restricted to eliminate sugar, cholesterol and salt poses some challenges to Bernice's cooking skills. One of her many solutions is a recipe for "phoney eggs" which she says beats the high cost of the egg substitutes available in stores.
