jury trials on it and also having
heard a habitual criminal charge
against Martin.
He said he was aware of
Martin's past criminal record and
that since 1970 he had been a
good citizen, with the exception
of his temper toward his wife
and children. The judge also
stated Martin had from the start
denied completely the charges
against him.
Deputy Prosecutor Richard
Adamson told the court Martin
had prior felony convictions for
burglary twice, escape and armed
robbery twice. Adamson said he
disagreed with a pre-sentence
report from King County which
recommended a suspended
sentence for Martin. Adamson
asked that Martin be committed
to the Department of Social and
flealth Services.
David L. Armstrong, Shelton,
pleaded guilty to two counts of
forgery. He appeared before
Judge Baker Thursday to enter
his pleas to the charges involving
two Mason County Federal
Credit Union checks which were
cashed January 26 and February
8 of this year.
A pre-sentence report was
ordered for Armstrong before he
is sentenced on the charge.
Appearing for identification
on a charge of second-degree
burglary was Ralph Grewell,
Shelton. Judge Baker, after
hearing arguments from his
attorney, John Jarrett,
Tumwater, refused to reduce bail
from the $10,000 which had
been previously set.
Dennis E. Marshall, 20,
Shelton, appeared for
identification on a charge of
second-degree burglary, a new
charge from three which were
previously filed against him.
Judge Baker appointed
Jarrett to represent Marshall on
the charge. Bail was set at
$ 1,000.
Mark Adams, 18, Shelton,
appeared for identification on a"
charge of second-degree burglary.
He was released in the custody
of his father and was allowed
one week to get an attorney.
Holiday
driving
caution urged
Motorists were reminded this
week by Sergeant Earl Sandquist,
head of the Mason County
Detachment of the Washington
State Patrol, to be cautious over
the Fourth of July holiday
weekend.
He said the patrol will be out
in force watching for traffic
violations.
Two new troopers have
recently been assigned to the
patrol detachment here and will
join those in the detachment on
patrol for the holiday weekend.
"Independence Day does not
apply on the highways; we must
depend on each other to drive
safely so we can all have an
Independence Day celebration,"
Sandquist said.
Wanted man
is arrested
Richard L. Scott, 36, 1322
Normandy Street, Hanford,
California, was arrested by
Mason County sheriff's deputies
at the Okanogan County jail last
Thursday afternoon on a Mason
County warrant charging him
with first-degree theft.
He is accused of taking a
1972 pickup belonging to
Richard M. Field April 11.
Scott appeared before Court
Commissioner Dan O'Leary for
identification Friday.
The Tumwater law firm of
Jarrett and Kaeding was
appointed to represent Scott in
the case.
Request referred
to prosecutor
Dimitri Todd, administrative
assistant to Sheriff Dan McNair,
presented the Mason County
Commission with a proposed
addition for a classification for
assistant crime prevention officer
under the civil service
regulations.
The civil service commission
has approved the classification,
he said.
The position would be for a
six-month period and would be
funded by a Law Enforcement
Assistance Agency grant.
Todd said he was making the
presentation on behalf of Deputy
Prosecutor John Buckwalter.
The commission referred the
request to the prosecutor's office
for recommendation.

Speed limit is asKe¢l
in Skokomish Valle,,
A petition asking for a 40
mile an hour speed limit on the
Skokomish Valley Road from
the Highway 101 intersection to
the Camp Govey turn off has
been presented to the Mason
County Commission.
The petition, containing 87
signatures, was presented by
Hayes Davis, a resident of the
Skokomish Valley.
Davis told the commission
the road is in good shape, but,
there are numerous driveways
coming off of it and children
and pets in the area who are
endangered by the traffic at the
speeds it now travels.
The commission commented
that posting speed limits will not
slow the traffic down without
enforcement of the speed limit.
Commissioner Tom Taylor
and County Engineer Morley
Young will check into the
request.
