SKIES may go unnoticed under the roof of the
school's pool facility, but it doesn't seem to bother
of the some 170 kids currently participatinq in summer
swim lessons there

And you thought they were
wet behind the ears, only.
Now, courtesy of the high
school's summer swimming
program, the wee ones are
dousing parts south of the
earlobes, as well -- and learning
to do so safely and with a degree
of grace.
The program -- for kids of
all ages, actually, but
predominated by your
three-foot-tall variety - involves
swimming lessons for beginners
as well as advanced beginners
and is offered thrice daily,
Monday through Friday, at the
Minidome pool.
Sessions of 45 minutes
duration begin at 9, 10 and 11
a.m. daily, under the direction of
instructor Staci Petraitis and her
large crew of assistants.
Beginning classes involve a
general orientation to safety
rules, breathing techniques and
your basic strokes. Advanced
beginners work on the
elementary backstroke and on
survival skills.
Adult sessions, due to begin
daily from 3-4 p.m. July 5 and
running through July 14, will
include survival and rescue skills
plus a special emphasis on
teaching parents to teach their
own infants to swim.
All lessons adhere strictly to
Red Cross format.
Although there are no age
requirements for the regular
sessions, pool manager Petraitis
says participants must be at least
three feet tall at the chin. As for
the special infant class, also
beginning July 5 when the
second two-week session of
regular lessons commences,
Petraitis says no one younger
than six months will be allowed.
"When they are started too
young they tend not to learn
respect for the water as well,"
she explains. "At six months
they understand things a little
better."
With 170 youngsters in the
summer's first session, Petraitis
has plenty of call for assistance.
And so far it is ample.
Instructors include John Coulon,
Lloyd German, Cindy Petersen,
Kitty Mak, JoAnn Krogh, Bob
Dally and Ross Radzykewycz.
Allan Eaton, Mike Coulon
and Barry Cochran are expected
to join the force next session.
Helpers are Rhonda Woodward,
Jan Lusignan and John Peterson.
Lifeguard is Eric Lusignan.
For those not anxious to
flaunt their nonskills under the
critical eye of an instructor,
supervised by noninstructive
)ublic swims will be 5-7 a.m..
-3 p.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Mondays through Saturdays
through August 12.
