Flies work well in high mountain lakes, but at times the tlsiL are rising just beyond the reach of a long cast. In other places you don't have room for a back cast. To counter this, carry one of the small plastic bubbles for your spinning rod for flies. Use two or three feet of two-pound test leader and retrieve it slowly. If the water is dead calm, the bubble can warn the fish. In a good wind riffle, the commotion of a slow retrieve is hidden. It's harder to set the hook with this kind of fly fishing than with a regular fly line, so the moment your bubble stops, set the hook. Cast to the individual rises. Raul and his educated toe, shaped over an 11.year career in school and city-league soccer back home, were thrust into local prominence last fall during what otherwise was something of a mediocre Climber varsity football season. Joining the team - and a sport entirely new to him - three weeks into the campaign, Raul went on to establish a school record for distance, with a boot of 33 yards, and tied the Climber mark for a season with three fieldgoals. The 5-10, 154-pound soccer.style placekicker had a 42-yarder in one game, but it was disallowed because of an infraction by his blockers. Earlier in practice he'd booted a 55-yarder. "And Raul has been getting better and better and better," marveled Stark, "This spring he was working a lot on his fieldgoals, and he got to where he could hit about one out of every five from 65 yards out. "And that's a pretty good poke! I'm certain he can kick at the college level." Stark added that another Allegre strong point likely a factor in the Grizzly coaching staff's decision to go after Raul is the ex-Climber's approach. Whereas most soccer.style placekickers require two steps and a short hop before kicking, Raul needs only one and that short hop. And that saves a split second or so of time greatly coveted by the onrushing defenders. Incidentally, he won't be the only Climber on the Grizzly roster. Former Climber linebacking great Sam Martin, all-state in 1975, will be a U of M starting defensive end, the same role he enjoyed with considerable recognition around the league last year as a mere sophomore.
