REED, veteran standout for Mason County
/omen's Softball Association representative Marv's Exxon,
lltakes a cut Saturday during the annual Bra-Buster
I]Tournament at Callanan Field. Her team took third -- top
finish among Mason County teams.

Mary's Exxon, a hometown
team whose Mason County
Women's Softball League success
has been only middling this
season, took its turn at the fore
last weekend at Callanan Park.
Bumping off its first two
opponents in Palitos' annual Bra
Buster Tournament, Marv's went
on to secure third place among
eight teams - the top finish
among county representatives.
Mary's and its
middle-of-the-pack 7-6 league
record took on Key West of
Bremerton in game one Friday
and made it look easy with a
16.8 triumph. Meanwhile
league-leading and undefeated
Shady Ladies of Sheltqo was
ekeing out a 5-4vict0ry over the
visiting Polar Bears of Tacoma.
That set up what Marv's
standout Martha Reed later
called the high point of the
team's season - Mary's 6-3
triumph over that same Shady
Ladies teLrn Saturday afternoon.
Marv's subsequently lost 3-8
to eventual champ Sam's Tires of
Lacey and 0-8 to the Polar
Bears, but not before the team
had secured third place and, as
an added measure of respect, a
tournament all-star berth to
rightfielder Janet Fleischer.
As for pretourney favorite
Shady Ladies, injuries to a
couple of key performers -
, noteworthy among them league
all-star Cathy Cole - hampered
its play, but nothing can be
taken away from the one-two
finishers, Sam's and Polar Bears.
Before edging out the Bears
2-1 in the championship game
Sunday, Sam's blasted the
Hustlers of Bremerton 17-0, got
past Buck's A and W of Port
Orchard 7-2 and beat Mary's 8-3.
The Bears, thrust into the
losers' bracket immediately by
Shady Ladies' game-one 5-4
victory, came back with an 18-9
pasting of Key West followed by
an 18-6 poun'd!ng of Shadies, an
18-6 victory over Buck's A and
W and an 8-0 win over Mary's.
Final standings found A and
W in fourth place, Hustlers in
fifth, Shady Ladies in sixth,
Mason County representative
SITE in seventh and KeyWest in
eighth.
Joining Fleischer on the
all-star team were Sam's
third-baseman Anka Gaylord,
Sam's shortstop Cheryl
Kolglazier, Sam's centerfielder
Roslyn Farrington, Polar Bears'
firstbagger Peg Ellis, Bears'
rightfielder Sue Doucette, Bears'
shortstop Jody Grace, Sam's
Tires' catcher Belinda Baker and
A and W utility player Ruth
Marsh.
Tourney MVP was Lori
Timberman of the Polar Bears.
Most-valuable pitcher was Sam's
Tami Kampbell.

FOLLOWING THROUGH on her delivery in the bottom half of the final
inning Saturday against Shady Ladies is Marv's pitcher Cheryl Peterson.
Cheryl set down the side without major incident and her team won 6-3 en
route to third place overall in the annual Bra-Buster Tourney. In the
background above is Shady Ladies' Manager Doug Wright.
ERUPTING POSTGAME, incredulous over their Bra-Buster
Tournament vanquishment of Shady Ladies, are the gals of
Marv's Exxon. From left, after Manager Ed Hanson, are
Janet Fleischer, Linda Clayton, Karen Johnson, Bev
Hillman, Kelly Hanson, Ginny Wood, Cheryl Peterson,
Martha Reed, Sue Radzykewycz and Pam Bell.
ilVAL WILSON, Marv's thirdbagger, pegs a throw to first in
lithe seventh inning of her team's big upset Saturday of
Ireviously unbeaten Shady Ladies.
