Fatigue is Often
Of Mental Origin,
Say U. W. Profs
(Editor's note: The following
article, was prepared by the
sUtffs of the schools of medicine,
dentistry and nursing at the
University of Washington.
"I'm so tired, and I don't know
why" is a frequent complaint. Peo-
ple in excellent physical condition
oft#n exhibit an unexplained tired-
hess.
FATI(iUE IS frequently of nlen-
tal origin. Strong emotional ex-
citement, silch as fear, hate and
envy is exhausting. Too, mental
boredom dissatisfaction with a
dull and recurring routine will re-
sult in that "tired feeling."
Another situation whietl results
in mental fatigue is a purposcless
existence. "Time on lily hands .... :
nothing to do" can be more ex-
hausting than a full schedule of
hard work.
Jolm Wesley, an influential
preacher of tim ]8th century, ex-
plained his apparently unlimited
energy and effectiveness by say-
ing: "I simply set myself afire,
arid people gather 'rolmd to watch
hie burn."
Vt'ESLEY LEAItNEi) early in
life that overt action, devotion to
a worthy cause, and purloseful
living avoided fatigue and released
unexpected energies and endur-
ance.
Fatigue often takes flight once
ideas are puL into action. The
tenseness of the athlete before the
game---the sleepless nights of the
politician before the campaign ....
the nervousness of the speaker be-
fore he ascends the platform-.all
experience the debilitating effects
of mental strain.
Yet, once the game is under
way, once the campaign is on,
onec the toastmaster says "Mr.
Jones," tenseness disappears and
hard work may actually become
restful to the performer.
The idea is--get out or' the idea
stage and into the action state, if
you want to avoid fatigue.
