MARY'S MEMOIRS
It is Fourth of July weekend and
Mary is busy at the store and having
company out to the canal. Mary has
to talk to the boys at the store and tell
them to stop teasing Ruth. They get the
new cold box up and running and now
the vegetables will keep much longer.
Enjoy./

Thursday June 30, 1938
This was a busy day and I did not
go home until I had the post office
report all ready for the mail in the
morning. Sam went to Seattle in the
early morning and got home about
the time we were ready to close the
store so I thought I might just as well
work on the report. It just started to
rain. I hope it does
not spoil the whole
weekend because
so many people are
scared out by the
rain no matter how
little. The motor for
the cold box is in
the store and tomor-
row the men will
By CLYDENE install it and we can
HOSTETLER put our vegetables
in the box and won't
have to worry about them spoiling or
wilting. Had a letter from Alice and
she's not coming out as her brother is
going to a lake instead of the canal.
So now we won't see her pictures. My
pictures came in and they are all good
as I hope the other girls had as good
luck as I did. Charlie has the electric
pump running for Lt. Smith and so
he went home to try to get the raft
out on the water for the end of the
week when someone will be here to
use it. Now that it is raining I wonder
how long my flowers will keep. John
called up and said that he and Annie,
Sam's mother and Jack are coming
out on the fourth and stay for a couple
of days. I'm told that his friend Mrs.
Baumgartner called up and wanted
to know how he was and he laughed.
Now I'm going to bed and get a good
night's rest.
Friday July 1, 1938
This was another busy day and
the new vegetable case is in running
order and all of the green stuff is in
it. We were fairly busy and got a lot of
odd jobs done for if it does not rain we
should be very busy tomorrow. I have
all my pictures and they are very good.
I cleaned the house good and Rudy
came down and talked for some time.
To bed early and got a good night's
rest. Sent out the post office report so
that is done for another quarter.
Saturday July 2, 1938
We certainly worked hard today
and now this evening Sam says that
we are going to the Victor dance and
I wonder how we are going to dance
when we both are so tired. John and
Annie have not shown up yet so I
don't know when they're coming for
we heard that the ferries could not
handle all the cars. Alice sent the blue
dishes but they did not come and I
guess it's just as well for the folks may
not come anyway. There were lots of
people in the store today and once
when Mrs. Buldoc was in she said, "All
of Bremerton is in here and both of the
Popes are out in front of their store
looking over here and not one car at
their place." I told Sam I suppose they
wonder, "What he's got we ain't got."
We sent the check to Mary Ryan for
the price of her brother's place. Now as
soon as she sends back the deed prop-
erly signed, our work is done for then
Ryan has all his money on his place.
It has made Sam a lot of work but he
did not seem bothered by it. Dorothy
Eddy was in the store and I had her
take three pictures when we were real
busy so now if some turn out good why
I shall have some made for the store.
The bay is lovely tonight but too cold
to go in. I suppose a lot of folks are dis-
appointed because they can't have the
sunshine on the only day of the year
that we really want it hot. Some sail-
ors had a fight out in front of Pears-
alls and the Patrol Wagon from the
yard soon came and got them. All the
customers in the store would run out
and look at the fight and then come
in as soon as they stopped. Then they
would start fighting again and every-
one would run out again. It seemed
to paralyze "industry." We sold about
100 pounds of cherries since yesterday
and I'm certainly glad that we got rid
of them. I was afraid we had too many
on hand and if we could find no one
who wanted to can them we would be
out of luck. The lawn looks very nice
and now that it rained some of it most
likely will do better for this is the first
time it has any water on it besides
water out of the hose. We have wa-
tered quite a lot on account of it being
so dry. I wrote to Mrs. Anderson and
asked her if she wanted to go to the
dinner at Elma on the llth of July and
she is agreeable so now I hope that
Mrs. Huson can go so we can have a
full load. It should be lots of fun.

We went to the dance and had a
good time, but I was so tired that I
