Sprinklers and fireworks -
and the sounds tl00Lq00y make
By MIKE CALLAGHAN
I know it's summer when
I hear the sound of my sprin-
kler as I try to drown out the
brown spot in my yard. Oh,
yeah, and that
unmistak-
able sound of
a firecracker
pop. Hope all
on the island
have a safe
and happy
Fourth of
July.
July 10 will be the day
of our next community club
meeting at the hall. Show
up around 6 for a chance
to meet with your neigh-
bors. There will be discus-
sion about the meeting on
the bridge to commemorate
the 40 years it has been in
service. Also, plans are on
the way for the Labor Day
Dance. Rich-
ard Gerber
will be there
playing the
sweet musi-
cal sounds of
the '60s and
'70s. I'm still
looking for
a co-chair for
this event. Most of the work
is already done.
The next Senior Lunch
will be Wednesday, July
15. Be there a little before
noon. They are serving a
salad extravaganza includ-
ing chicken, pasta and fruit
salads. There will be crois-
sants with butter and the
dessert will be a surprise.
If you will remember
back, the Pioneer Kiwan-
is put on its annual Crab
and Clam Dinner last
March. One of the auction
items was a small tool shed
or playhouse. Well, it had
to be built and delivered,
which turned into a bigger
project than anticipated,
but they got it done and it
turned out to be beautiful. A
special thanks to Bob Helm
for putting the project to-
gether.

Shelton High School
graduate Richard 'Richie' ::i:::
Ware is home for the sum-
mer.
"It's nice to be able to
spend time at home with my
family and old friends," said
Ware, "not having to worry
about school and be able to
just have fun with the peo-
ple you care about and don't
get to see often."
Richie is the son of Keena
and Richard Ware and older
brother to recent SHS grad-
uate, Stephanie Ware.
Graduating with the SHS
class of 2007 as seventh in
his class, Richie ended his
high school career receiving
high honors.
"I worked hard in high
school," said Ware, "it was
difficult at times but it paid
off."
Richie participated in the
Running Start Program at
SHS through
Olympic Col-
lege here in ii iiii
Shelton, al- i ii i
lowing him
to get a year
head start on
college.
He has been
attending Saint
Martins University for the
past two years majoring in
biology. Richie also has an
accumulative grade point
average of 3.7, and has
made the Dean's list four se-
mesters.
"I decided to attend Saint
Martins because it has a re-
ally great acceptance rate
into medical school," said
Ware, "I also received a for-
ty thousand dollar academic
scholarship which helped
sway my decision."
After college and medical
school Richie hopes to pur-
Richie Ware
sue a career in anesthesiol-
ogy.
"I volunteered at the hos-
pital here in Shelton for
three years," said Ware, "I
knew I was interested in the
medical field and so I finally
got to sit in on
iliiii!!ii athatand surgerydecidedbeing
[iE i an anes-
thesiologist
would be a
really cool
career."
Although
Richie had a ead start on
college classes he didn't
know what to expect when
it came to living on his own.
"I was a little worried
about living on my own,"
said Ware, "but you have to-
tal freedom in college, you're
with your friends all the
time and you learn how to
become an adult slowly but
surely."
When it came down to ad-
vice for students wanting to
attend college he had a few
words to say.
'°lrou can't procrastinate
because college professors
wont have it," said Ware,
"it has to be homework first,
fun later."
For fun Richie and his
friends would do a wide va-
riety of activities.
"We would go out to eat
a lot," said Ware, "we also
liked to spend a lot of the
time at the gym and work
out of play basketball, but
mostly we played guitar
hero which would get pretty
intense."
Now that he's home he
has plans for the summer
which he's really excited for.
"Since it's summer and
my family lives on the lake
I spend a lot of time on the
water," said Ware, "I final-
ly get to wakeboard again
which is one of my favorite
hobbies."
College is a great expe-
rience," said Ware, "every-
one should go because even
if you aren't social you get
put in situations where you
have to be and in the end
it'll help make you a better
person."
