Student Continued from page C-1 "He leads by example and he shows up every day and never misses practice. It helps when you have your better players show up," Daniels said. The practice has paid off for the youngest Dunning- ton. At last week's Apple Valley Invitational, Dun- nington hit for the cycle and pitched a complete game in a 5-4 victory over Eastmont. Dunnington is batting .448 this season with 38 RBIs, four home runs, 11 doubles and 26 stolen bas- es. He has been a vacuum on the infield all season and has the most power- ful bat in the lineup - all accomplished with a near- silent demeanor. "That is just the way I am," Dunnington said. "I don't like to jump on people, but I will help them. I don't really talk too much. I try to lead by example." Dunnington began playing baseball in Little League and hasn't stopped. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound- er is also a standout bas- ketball player for Shelton and figures to be one of the team's top players his se- nior season. "I probably like baseball a bit more. It comes more naturally to me. Whenever I walk out on to the baseball field, it feels right for me," Dunnington said. "It's not as fast-paced as basketball. You have time to think." Daniels feels lucky to have such a well-rounded athlete on his squad. "He is the most physical guy on the team. He is very versatile, but is relegated to Tyler Dunnington, center, watches the action with a shortstop and pitcher role by necessity this season. He has all the tools and he is a guy that understands the game - the little things. Some of that stuff you can't teach." Dunnington and his coach differ on what posi- tion he will eventually play, but both are confident he has a lot of baseball ahead of him. "As far as the tools of the game, he hits the ball to all fields, he hits for a high percentage and he is a good base runner because of his instincts. Defensively, he takes charge and he can make all the plays," Daniels said. "Ultimately, he will be a third baseman." Dunnington would like to play at a four-year school after next season, but is also open to starting at a community college. "In college I see myself as an outfielder, but I would be fine anywhere. I like every position," Dunnington said. Regardless of his base- ball future, Dunnington would like to eventually pursue a position in the medical field. Shelly, who maintains the Timbers score book, works at Mason General and Ty- ler recently completed a job shadow at the hospital. "I would like to look at being an x-ray tech or some- thing along those lines," he said. His coach recognizes the influence his parents have had on Dunnington. "His parents have been involved since day one and that really helps a kid," Daniels said. "Tyler is a bright, intelligent kid. He knows he has a lot of talent, but he doesn't advertise it."
